2015 Moto G vs Moto G 2nd Gen: What to Expect

Published

on

All summer long leaks and rumors have been talking about the new Moto G for 2015, and it’s finally ready to be announced and released. Yesterday Motorola confirmed an event will take place on July 28th where we’ll likely see the new Moto G 2015 (3rd Gen) along with a new Moto X and maybe a second Moto 360 smartwatch. Here we want to compare the current Moto G to the 3rd Gen model that will be revealed later this month.

At first all of the leaks and rumors were about a new Moto X for 2015, but lately focus has turned to the Moto G and what it will offer for the typical low price Motorola charges. The last two weeks it has leaked on video, photos have emerged, details about specs, and now we even have all the details.

The original Moto G was Motorola’s most successful smartphone ever released, believe it or not, and that’s because it has tons to offer all for only $179. The first one arrived in August of 2013, and a 2nd Gen Moto G was released in September of 2014. We expected something similar in 2015, but it’s coming even sooner, and will be the best Moto G yet. Read on to see how it compares to last years model.

The Moto G is a well rounded budget friendly device that has rang in at $179 over the past two years, outright, without a contract. Making it instantly one of the best smartphones for the price. However, in 2015 Motorola looks to offer a much better Moto G, all for the same low price.

Around the end of June some official press photos surfaced showing us what to expect, and earlier this week we received a leak that confirms some exciting news for Moto G buyers. Claiming the new Moto G for 2015 will support MotoMaker.com customization just like the bigger Moto X. Meaning buyers will be able to choose from a variety of different colors, accent colors, wallpapers and more.

At this point we know what the Moto G 3rd Gen for 2015 looks like, when it will be announced, what we can expect in terms of features, specs and customization, and likely the price all based on some leaks. With that in mind here’s how it compares to the original.

Design

The leaks we’ve seen so far lead us to believe the new Moto G in 2015 will look nearly exactly the same as last year, only it will have Motorola’s new signature aluminum bar down the back going from the camera to the Moto logo. We’ve seen it on leaks for any and all Moto phones coming this year, and as you can see below it’s also included on the Moto G. This was a leaked render, which may or may not be 100% accurate. The edges look slightly more curved in some actual device photos that leaked yesterday.

Moto G-2015

However, while the new Moto G will look somewhat similar to last years option, it will be customizable in MotoMaker.com this year. That means users will be able to choose tons of different colors, accent colors, and maybe even different materials for the back. The Moto X can be made of plastic, wood, or leather, but we doubt that kind of customization is coming to the budget-friendly Moto G.

Users can expect the same 5-inch screen, dual front facing speakers, but we might not have a removable back this year if Motorola is doing all of the customization. We’ll have to wait and see.

Display

Sadly from what we’re hearing the new Moto G won’t be very different from last year. It has the same screen and screen size, a similar quad-core processor, but there will be a few changes. Those being the camera, customization, battery, and rumors of it being water-resistant.

That means buyers can expect the exact same 5-inch 1280 x 720p HD display on the new Moto G. That isn’t a bad thing though, as it was an excellent screen for the price, and perfect for anyone on a budget.

Specs

While the design and screen appear to be the same, Motorola has made some changes to the phone that will make it a worthy upgrade from the 2014 Moto G. A lot of the specs are the same, likely to keep the price down, but they’ve improved a few key areas.

Moto G 2015 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5-inch 720p HD display
  • Quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor
  • 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM
  • 16GB model with 2GB of RAM
  • 13 Megapixel rear and 5 MP front camera setup
  • Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
  • Dual front facing speakers
  • 4G LTE and a micro-SD slot
  • MotoMaker Support
  • Water-resistant
  • 2,470 mAh battery
  • more

The new Moto G will have the same screen size and resolution as last year, and even nearly the same powerful quad-core processor. That said, it will feature an improved 13 megapixel rear camera, bigger battery, water-resistant capabilities (still a rumor) and be customizable.

Here’s what was included in the model released last year, that this new phone will be replacing.

Moto G Specs (2014)

  • 5-inch 1280 x 720p HD Display
  • 1.2 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8/16GB storage with micro-SD support
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • 4G HSPA+ (no 4G LTE sadly)
  • 8 Megapixel rear and 1.3 front cameras
  • Dual front-facing speakers
  • 2,070 mAh battery
  • 8 custom color back-plates

This year it looks like buyers will be able to choose between an 8GB model with 1GB of RAM, and a 16GB model with 2GB of RAM and 4G LTE. It’s possible both will have 4G LTE, but we can’t be sure until Motorola announces all the details on the 28th.

Certainly the better camera, longer battery life, customization, and slightly more powerful processor will make this a great phone for the price.

Customization

As mentioned above, the Moto G last year had a removable back with 8 different colors that could be swapped out at any moment. It was a nice little addition, but nothing like the customization of MotoMaker.com that gives you tons of choices.

In 2015 the new Moto G is rumored to be customizable on MotoMaker, but that has yet to be confirmed. The image below comes form famed leakster @evleaks, so we’re inclined to believe that rumor right now.

Shown above is the new Moto G getting the customization love from Motorola. Buyers will be able to go to Motomaker.com and choose the storage amount, RAM, colors, custom backplate and accent colors, a wallpaper and more and get the device shipped right to their door. Pretty good options for a $179 phone, if that indeed is the price.

Release Date & Price

The last two years the Moto G was announced and released during the same month, and cost just $179. And while Motorola could surprise everyone and make the new Moto G and Moto X available the day they announce it, July 28th, it likely will hit shelves in early August.

This week the popular website Tecmundo, who’s been accurately with leaks in the past, revealed more information about MotoMaker, the water-resistant features, battery size, and the release date.

Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 10.21.18 AM

The site also states the new Moto G will retail for BRL899 ($286), however import taxes on electronics in Brazil makes everything higher than usual. That is about what it cost last year, which means we can absolutely expect the 2015 Moto G to cost under $200 in the United States.

We’re expecting Motorola to offer the regular Moto G with 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM for $179, then for $199 or $229 users can get the 16GB model with 2GB of RAM, 4G LTE, and all the customization options mentioned above. It would be impressive if that was available even at the low $179 price point, but that’s asking a lot.

All said and done we only have a few more weeks to wait before Motorola officially reveals everything themselves. Stay tuned for more details.
