iPad Air 3 Release Rumors: What We Know So Far

Published

on

While we didn’t see an iPad Air 3 release in 2015, it looks like 2016 will be the year that we will fianlly see it. Here’s what we know so far about the iPad Air 3 release, based on rumors.

Apple unfortunately skipped over the iPad Air 3 release late last year during its iPhone 6s event, and instead announced the iPad Pro, which is a 12.9-inch tablet that’s now Apple’s largest iPad yet, as well as its most expensive tablet by far, with a starting price of $799.

However, Apple hasn’t forgotten about its smaller 9.7-inch iPad, and it appears that the company will release the iPad Air 3 this year after skipping a release in 2015, making it the first year that a new 9.7-inch iPad hasn’t been released.

It is possible, though, that Apple could be rebranding the iPad Air 3 into the iPad Pro, according to a recent rumor (more on that below), which could mean the end of the iPad Air name.

The iPad Air 3 is a rumored tablet that hasn’t gotten much attention as far as the rumor mill is concerned, but things are quickly picking up as we move further into 2016, especially as we get closer to a possible Apple event that could go down next month.

Here’s what we know so far about the iPad Air 3 release and what rumors say about the upcoming tablet, as well as what we can probably expect.

Better Performance

Better Performance

This one's a no doubter, just like with every new iPad that Apple announces. The iPad Air 3 will receive a performance boost, most likely with an upgrade to an A9 processor instead of the A8X and most likely sticking with 2GB of memory like before.

However, a recent report from DigiTimes suggests that the new tablet could get as much as 4GB of RAM, which would match the iPad Pro's 4GB of RAM if true. DigiTimes has had a shaky reputation, so we're taking this one with a grain of salt for now, but we wouldn't be surprised to see iPad Pro-like specs, including an A9X processor if we're lucky.

Of course, it probably won't be a huge performance upgrade from the iPad Air 2, as it usually never is, but a faster processor never hurts, and if you're in the market for a new iPad, grabbing the iPad Air 3 will be the best option at that point.
