iOS 8.4.1 Jailbreak Release Could Arrive Soon

Earlier this month Apple released iOS 8.4.1 that patched up the iOS 8.4 jailbreak from TaiG. However, an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak has been successful.

Pangu (who has been out of the jailbreak game for a while) looks to be back in it by teasing an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak release at the HackPwn2015 security conference over the weekend.

In an Apple support document detailing the variety of fixes and improvements in iOS 8.4.1, the company credited the TaiG jailbreak team for finding the security exploits in iOS 8.4 and earlier versions of iOS 8. Apple sees these exploits as security threats and while they weren’t used as such with the jailbreak, there’s always the potential that they could be used for malicious use.

We predicted back in July that the iOS 8.4.1 update would most likely patch up TaiG’s iOS 8.4 jailbreak, as Apple usually does that after a new jailbreak is released. It’s rare that a jailbreak can work in the latest version of iOS for so long without Apple doing something about it.

It’s been one of the busiest times for the jailbreak community, though, especially in June and July, when an iOS 8.3 jailbreak was released in June and then an iOS 8.4 jailbreak released in late June, right after the iOS 8.4 update itself released.

As for this new iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak that Pangu teased over the weekend, it’s up in the air whether or not they’ll release it to the public. At this point, it’s merely just a proof of concept and probably isn’t even ready for the public in the first place.

Plus, iOS 9 is right around the corner and it’s likely that Pangu, TaiG, and any other jailbreak teams who want to join in will most likely be focusing all of their efforts on jailbreaking iOS 9.

Furthermore, many avid jailbreak users are actually hoping that Pangu doesn’t release an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak, simply because it would give Apple another shot at patching up known exploits before iOS 9 officially releases.

Users over on Reddit’s /r/Jailbreak subreddit are hoping that jailbreak dev teams focus their efforts on iOS 9, saying that “it would be a massive waste” since iOS 9 is right around the corner.

Other users are echoing that same thought, saying that they don’t mind if an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak isn’t released and instead will await the release of an iOS 9 jailbreak, whenever that will be.

In any case, this is great news, as it goes to show that no matter what Apple does to patch up exploits, there’s always another exploit that developers can find and make their way into in order to deliver another jailbreak.

In any case, if you haven’t yet updated to iOS 8.4.1 and are wanting to jailbreak your device, be sure not to update and stick with iOS 8.4.0 instead. That version is still jailbreakable using the current methods. All you have to do is back up your iPhone first, then download the TaiG jailbreak tool and let it do its thing. The process should only take a few minutes and once it’s done, you’ll have a jailbroken iOS device.

Keep in mind that once iOS 9 releases, a jailbreak won’t be available for it right away, as jailbreak developers will need to first find an exploit once the new version releases, and it could take a couple of months before that happens, which is usually the case for new versions of iOS that release.

Of course, we have our fingers crossed that an iOS 9 jailbreak will release sooner rather than later, but it’s certainly not something that we’d recommend waiting frantically for. Instead, have some patience (which is required in the jailbreaking community) and sit back until an iOS 9 jailbreak is released, which should hopefully arrive before Christmas, but we’re not making any promises of any kind.
