The iPhone 6s release date is confirmed for September 25th but you won’t have to wait to buy the new iPhone because the iPhone 6s pre-order date arrives this Saturday. With just hours to go before the start iPhone 6s pre-orders, we want to offer you some advice that should help you get the model you want.

Yesterday, Apple took the stage and announced several brand new products including two flagship iPhone models. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus arrive with a number of new features ranging from new 12MP rear cameras to improved displays.

On stage, Apple confirmed an iPhone 6s release date for September 25th. That date will feature several key regions including the United States. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have all confirmed plans to release both models in September.

Before the iPhone 6s release date is the iPhone 6s pre-order date. Apple and various partners will be taking pre-sales for both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. And if you’ve been through an iPhone release before, you know that the pre-order process can be a little bit tricky.

The iPhone is a popular phone and it typically sells out ahead of its release date. If you want the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus on release day, you’ll probably want to think about pre-ordering your device when sales begin at midnight PST on September 12th.

It can be a bit of an art and today we want to share some things that have worked well for us in the past. Keep these iPhone 6s pre-order tips in mind as we approach the start of pre-orders in the United States and countries around the world.

Check Your Upgrade

Before midnight, you’ll want to look into your upgrade to make sure that you have one. Otherwise, you might wind up wasting your time.

To do this, you can login into your account at AT&T, Verizon or whatever carrier you’re currently using. You can do that online or you should be able to call in and do it that way too.

You’ll want to look for details regarding your upgrade eligibility. It should be front and center but if it’s not, do some digging and don’t be afraid to ask questions of customer service agents. They are paid to help you.

You can also check your upgrade status through Apple’s website. You’ll need some key information like your SSN but that should be fairly easy to track down.

Get Online Early

The iPhone 6s might be an “S” model but it’s still an iPhone and we expect the pre-order process at midnight to be a scrum, per usual. So, you better come prepared.

To do that, you’ll want to show up well ahead of the 12:01AM pre-order time. You do not want to sit down at the computer or fire up your phone/tablet a minute before things kick off. You’ll want to give yourself a 20-30 minute buffer so that you can get everything in place.

Get on your comptuer or device early, get everything sorted, get the proper windows and tabs open, do your homework, and be patient.

Gather Your Information

Make sure you come to the iPhone 6s pre-order with all of your information in hand. Not having the proper information will slow up the pre-order process and it could prevent you from getting the iPhone 6s model you want in the time frame that you want.

You’ll want to have all of your primary login information down ahead of September 12th. This includes Apple ID and any carrier login information in your possession. Know the login names and passwords. If you’re the primary account holder, this info won’t be hard to track down. If you aren’t, give mom or dad a call.

You’ll also want to have your SSN (or the account holders SSN), billing information, and current shipping information available. You’ll probably have to ship your device to the primary billing address so if that’s not your current shipping address, get that handled now.

The last thing you want to be doing at midnight on Saturday is calling someone for this information. Get it handled right now so that you don’t have to bother anyone on their day off.

Use the Apple Store App

While you might be tempted to put in an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus pre-order through Apple’s website or a carrier website, you might have better luck putting in an order through the company’s Apple Store application.

The Apple Store application is free and it’s saved us in the past. Apple’s website and carrier websites sometimes crumble on pre-order day. Apple’s application is typically pretty stable and it allows you to buy the iPhone in the same way you would on Apple’s website.

If you start experiencing issues, give it a shot. It’s also an option for those of you that don’t want to get out of bed at 3AM on a Saturday night/morning. You can order right from your phone or tablet.

Have a Backup Payment Plan

You’ll want to have a backup payment option in place in case the card you’re using gets flagged by your bank or credit card company.

If you don’t normally make purchases through Apple or if you typically don’t make big expensive purchases on the card you plan to use, the company responsible for your card might flag the purchase which could prevent you from putting in an pre-order.

To ensure that this doesn’t affect your iPhone 6s pre-order, make sure you have another payment option on hand. Make sure you have the information for the other card handy as well.

Decide on Storage Now

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will come in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB sizes. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus aren’t cheap and you’ll want to have the perfect storage size locked down well ahead of the iPhone 6s pre-order hour.

Some of you won’t need anything more than the base 16GB model. Others will want the peace of mind that comes with the 64GB iPhone. Power users might want the 128GB iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. You need to decide where you fall right now.

Last year, we put together a guide that takes you through the different iPhone storage options. Things haven’t changed so these reasons still apply.

Select iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models will probably sell out on Saturday so you’ll want to know exactly what you want so you get it exactly when you want it.

Decide on Color Now

The new iPhones come in gold, gray, silver, and rose gold. Rose gold is a new pinkish color that should excite those who’ve been hoping for a pink iPhone. It also has the potential to sell out quickly as most new iPhone colors do.

iPhone 6s Color to Buy

Decide on your iPhone 6s color right now. There are some pros and cons of each that you’ll want to consider ahead of the pre-order date.

Have a Backup iPhone 6s Plan

Make sure you have a backup plan in place just in case.

There’s always a chance that the exact model you’re after will be the one that sells out immediately (64GB Rose Gold iPhone 6s?). 16GB and 64GB models are typically the first to go.

We expect shipping times to get worse as the day goes on so if you’re adamant about getting the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus on September 25th, you’ll want to have a second and third pick.

Research Your Buying Options Now

Apple and its U.S. carriers partners have made some major changes ahead of the iPhone 6s release date. For instance, Apple no longer sells the AT&T iPhone on-contract. You also won’t be able to buy the Verizon iPhone 6s on-contract through Verizon itself. Get familiar with these changes, and others, before Saturday.

You Can Buy AppleCare Later

AppleCare is Apple’s warranty service and it’s something that you’ll probably want to look into both before and after the iPhone 6s pre-order date. That said, you don’t have to buy it when you purchase the iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus and trying to deal with it on Saturday might slow you down.

You should have a 30 day window to buy the service which means that’ll be able to bypass the option on Saturday night.

If you are undecided or haven’t done any research, don’t feel any pressure to add that to your cart when buying the iPhone 6s.

Don’t Mess Around with Accessories

And finally, don’t let iPhone 6s accessories distract you from your pre-order.

The iPhone pre-order is all about accuracy and speed, especially if you’re gunning for a very specific model. If you don’t act fast and get an order in, you might have to wait for several weeks for stock to return.

Researching iPhone 6s accessories on pre-order day will only slow you down. iPhone 6s accessories aren’t going anywhere and you’ll be able to buy them at will. Apple and its carrier partners will likely try to entice you. Don’t let that happen, at least not at Midnight on Saturday.

iPhone 6s vs iPhone 6: What’s New

3D Touch Display

3D Touch Display

The new 3D Touch display on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus makes a plethora of features possible, some of which we will break out into sections.

In short the new iPhone 6s display is the same size and resolution as the iPhone 6 display, but it can now tell the difference between a tap, a press and a deeper press. This allows users to call up secondary actions in many apps and on the home screen as well as in games.

The video above shows the new 3D Touch display on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Even though the iPhone 6s display looks very similar to the iPhone 6 and both phones run iOS 9, you cannot use these new features on the old iPhone because the technology is not there.

3D Touch display actions work on the home screen, in Apple apps and in third-party apps.
