How to Update to iOS 9.1 from the iOS 9 Jailbreak

Published

on

If you’ve decided that you’re going to update to iOS 9.1 and lose your iOS 9 jailbreak, here’s how to update to iOS 9.1 the right way.

iOS 9.1 was released earlier today, and it’s not a super big update by any means, but it does come with a handful of bug fixes and other improvements across the board. Perhaps the most notable new feature is over 150 new emoji that users can take advantage of now, including the midd finger emoji that many iOS users have been waiting for.

It’s a nice update for iPhone and iPad users, but the update also patched up the iOS 9 jailbreak from Pangu, forcing jailbreakers to stay away from the latest version of iOS for the time being until Pangu can find another exploit.

If you’ve been playing around with the iOS 9 jailbreak, but are wanting to update to iOS 9.1, you can do so pretty easily. Most jailbreakers will not even want to touch iOS 9.1, as it would delete their jailbreak. However, we don’t blame you if you want that middle finger emoji really badly.

Right now, there’s not a lot of risk if you’re wanting to update to iOS 9.1 and lose your jailbreak, since you can still downgrade to iOS 9.0.2 if you want to, as Apple is still signing the older version. However, that won’t be the case in a couple of weeks.

So if you’re wanting to update to iOS 9.1 and are comfortable with losing your iOS 9 jailbreak, here’s how to update to iOS 9.1 the right way.

Before You Begin

Before you do anything to your iPhone or iPad, it’s crucial that you back it up first. You can do this easily in iTunes and we even have a guide that takes you through the process, but if you’re an iOS veteran, you probably already know how to do it.

It’s important to always back up your iPhone whenever you change anything on it, especially when you update it. If anything should go wrong, you don’t want to lose all of your apps and settings. Backing up ensures that you’ll still have all of this if your iPhone should ever come across any problems.

Unfortunately, on a jailbroken iPhone, it doesn’t allow you to update iOS over-the-air, so you’ll have to do it through iTunes, but the process isn’t any different than how you would normally update your iPhone.

Plug in your iPhone, open up iTunes and go to the device’s summary page. From there, simply just click Update and follow the steps to update your device to iOS 9.1 like normal.

You could also click Restore iPhone, which will factory wipe your iPhone, as well as update it to iOS 9.1. Updating a clean iPhone is recommended by a lot of users, simply because there’s less that can go wrong during the process. Then, after the process is complete, you can just restore the backup that you made before you began the process.

iOS 9.1 Jailbreak Status

Unfortunately, Apple patched up the iOS 9 jailbreak exploits in iOS 9.1, which means that this latest version isn’t jailbreakable, so when will we see an iOS 9.1 jailbreak?

At this point, that’s unclear and nobody really knows when an iOS 9.1 jailbreak could release. However, it’s more than likely that the Pangu dev team is looking at iOS 9.1 right now and trying to find exploits that they can use to break into the latest update in order to jailbreak it.

The only problem is that we probably won’t get moment-by-moment updates as far as their progress, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see a sudden iOS 9.1 jailbreak release without any warning, which is what usually happens when a new jailbreak releases.
