Downgrade to iOS 9.0.2 No Longer Possible

Published

on

If you’re wanting to downgrade to iOS 9.0.2 from iOS 9.1, it’s no longer possible as Apple as stopped signing the older version of iOS 9.

Frankly, it was only a matter of time before this happened. Apple released iOS 9.1 last week, which came with a handful of bug fixes, performance improvements, and new emoji for users to enjoy. However, the update also patched up the iOS 9 jailbreak from Pangu, meaning that jailbreakers couldn’t update to iOS 9.1 without losing their jailbreak.

However, for those that accidentally updated to iOS 9.1, there was a small window of time where you could downgrade to iOS 9.0.2 since Apple was still signing the older version, but this is no longer possible, unfortunately.

So if you updated to iOS 9.1 but haven’t downgraded yet, or you haven’t yet upgraded to iOS 9 to jailbreak the new version, you’re out of luck.

Usually Apple doesn’t allow users to downgrade to an older version of iOS, but after they release a new version or update, they secretly keep the old version open for a week or two. This allows users to downgrade to the older version using a slightly special restore method in iTunes.

An iOS 9 jailbreak was released a couple of weeks ago just a few days before iOS 9.1 arrived and about a month after iOS 9 initially released. It was the quickest jailbreak release that we’ve seen in a while for a major version of iOS, as they’ve usually taken a couple of months to release.

Currently, there’s no news on whether or not an iOS 9.1 jailbreak will arrive soon. Usually we get bits and pieces of information from jailbreak developers as far as progress is concerned, but we haven’t heard anything yet.

It’s very possible that Pangu could wait until iOS 9.2 is released so that their exploits won’t get patched up yet again if they were to release an iOS 9.1 jailbreak too early. Apple likes to stay up to date on this and patch up any jailbreak exploits when they can, so if a new jailbreak releases, it’s guaranteed that Apple will patch them up in the next update if they’re able to.

Apple recently moved to a more rapid release schedule starting with iOS 8 last year, which means that more and more iOS updates are releasing, thus making it more difficult for jailbreak exploits to stick around for a long time, since a new iOS update will quickly patch it up. It’s new roadblock for the jailbreaking community, but so far it has to have a major impact.

Of course, those who are still on iOS 9.0.2 can still jailbreak their iPhones and iPads, since the Pangu jailbreak is still up and running for those who want to use it, just as long as you didn’t update to iOS 9.1.

The iOS 9 jailbreak is perhaps the best one yet as far as jailbreak tweaks are concerned. Many new tweaks released that take advantage of the new iOS 9 features, like getting Split View multitasking on older iPads and even getting the iPhone 6s’s 3D Touch capabilities on older iPhones.

We’ve also talked about a handful of other tweaks that jailbreakers should check out, and the selection of iOS 9 Cydia tweaks is better than ever.

Of course, if you’re wanting to update to iOS 9.1 to take advantage of the new emoji, we don’t blame you, but you’ll lose your jailbreak in the process, so it’s a decision that you shouldn’t take lightly. The good news is that there are jailbreak tweaks available that can give you the new iOS 9.1 emoji, although some users are experiencing issues with them currently, but they should get updated soon enough.
