Does Jailbreaking Slow Down Your iPhone?

Published

on

Jailbreaking is a great way to open up the capabilities of your iPhone, but does jailbreaking slow down your iPhone and cause instability?

There are plenty of great reasons to jailbreak your iPhone, but what many beginner jailbreakers worry about is the possibility that jailbreaking can slow down their iPhone and hinder performance.

This is a valid concern, and it’s definitely one of the big downsides of jailbreaking, but jailbreaking doesn’t have to slow down your iPhone, and if it does, it’s a temporary problem that can be fixed.

Of course, if you’re interested in jailbreaking your iPhone, you’ll need to make sure that your device is running iOS 9.0.2. Anything newer isn’t jailbreakable currently, as Apple patched up the jailbreak exploits with the release of iOS 9.1 and they’re still intact in iOS 9.2.

However, if you’re on iOS 9.0.2, then you can easily jailbreak your iPhone without a problem, and we have a great guide that takes you through the process of jailbreaking.

After you have jailbroken your iPhone, though, you might be worried that it will slow down your iPhone, whether it’s right away or over time. Here’s what you need to know about jailbreaking and your iPhone’s performance.

Does Jailbreaking Slow Down Your iPhone?

This is one of the most-asked questions from people who are interested in jailbreaking, and it’s a good question because it’s a legitimate concern.

When you jailbreak your iPhone and install various tweaks, you’re modifying iOS at the code level, which means changes to the system will happen, which can be a cause for concern as far as performance and overall stability.

To answer the big question, yes, jailbreaking can slow down your iPhone, but it’s not something that’s permanent and it’s not something that just magically happens the second you jailbreak your iPhone.

First of all, iPhones get slower over time anyway, whether it’s jailbroken or not. As iOS gets more features and more resource-heavy, the more that older iPhones won’t be able to keep up. Of course, this isn’t the main reason why jailbroken iPhones can slow down, but it’s perhaps one reason to consider when you experience performance issues.

Essentially, installing a lot of jailbreak tweaks can slow down your iPhone, depending on what tweaks you install and how many of them you install. Plus, some jailbreak tweaks might clash with others, resulting in iPhone performance problems and slow downs.

The good news is that jailbreak can’t permanently slow down your iPhone. Usually it’s just a matter of figuring out the culprit (which is usually a single tweak that’s creating problems) and getting rid of it.

Overall, though, jailbreaking can slow down your iPhone, and it’s likely during your jailbreak experience that you’ll come across some performance issues at some point, but it’s something that can easily be fixed if you know how to troubleshoot jailbreak problems.

In fact, more of than not, iPhone slow down will likely be the least of your worries when it comes to jailbreaking your iPhone. It’s possible to come across random boot loops, app crashes, and error messages more often than any performance issues, so while you may be worried that jailbreaking can slow down your iPhone’s performance, that should the least of your worries.

Activator

One of the most popular jailbreak tweaks of all time is Activator, and it's easy to see why. Activator allows you to set up automations as well as shortcuts for all sorts of different actions, like automatically turning on your alarms for the next day and even changing songs using the volume buttons.

This is especially true now that Activator works on iOS 10, so you can combine it with everything that Apple added to iOS 10 and iOS 10.2.

AppDrawer

One of the best features of Android is the app drawer, where all of your installed apps appear when you bring it up. Something like this is awesome, since you don't have to have all of your apps on the home screen, and now the feature is on iOS through Cydia thanks to AppDrawer.

Browser Changer

Do you use a web browser on your iPhone other than Safari? Then it might be nice to actually change iOS's default browser to your preferred one using Browser Changer. This means that any links from other apps will now open in the web browser of your choice and not just default to Safari.

Bytafont 3

iOS 9 added a new San Francisco font that is still in iOS 10. If you're not a huge fan of it, you can use Bytafont 3 to change the font to whatever you want. The possibilities are endless here.

DeleteForever

Not a big fan of the Recently Deleted folder in the Photos app? While there isn't an iOS 10 Cydia tweak to get rid of the folder, you can at least bypass it altogether when deleting a photo.

DeleteForever will allow you to permanently delete photos with one swoop, rather than deleting a photo and then having to delete it again from the Recently Deleted folder.

    I agree with Greg.
I could have made a more accurate description of the actual risks and rewards one reaps of jailbreaking after getting shot with an elephant tranq dart in my forehead.
