5 Things Wrong with BattleField Hardline Single Player

The new Battlefield Hardline single player video shows off a new mode for Battlefield that looks fun, but there are a lot of holes in the story and gameplay that make it hard to suspend belief and really dig into the game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still excited about Battlefield Hardline, and looking forward to the new Battlefield Hardline beta that will come ahead of the release, but it’s tough to overlook these oddities in the BattleField Hardline single player mode.

The good news is this is only BattleField Hardline single player alpha footage, and we still have several months before the release in 2015. Many of these issues relate to the story, which DICE VP Karl Magnus Troedsson promises would see more depth, so I’m holding out hope that there is more work to be done.

At the end of the day, many people will buy BattleField Hardline for the multiplayer experience that allows you to play as the cops or the robbers in epic showdowns.

Watch the Battlefield Hardline single player video to see the issues for yourself, or read on to find out if I’m just picky or if DICE needs to up the story in the Battlefield Hardline single player mode.

Lock Pick Problem

Deus Ex lock pick?

Deus Ex lock pick?

The girlfriend who set you up just happens to be holding a lock pick that she hands you. Which gets you out of your cell, but not out of your hand cuffs. Luckily the electrician has a spare handcuff key in his back pocket.

The Silo

Luckily you know where you are because it used to be a party place.

Luckily you know where you are because it used to be a party place.

Thankfully after you pick a simple lock and kill an electrician to get free you are in an abandoned missile silo that you know, or at least the guy you’ve ben hanging out with knows because it was party central long before it became a brand of Bad guy HQ, right outside a small bad guy dominated town.

Hank Hill Propane Depot

Is this the Hank Hill add-on for Hardline? There are literally propane tanks everywhere. Bad guys aren’t always smart, but if you can lead a local militia and take over a missile silo, you would think you could order at least one criminal to clean up all the propane tanks sitting next to desks and any type of cover.

Propane tanks and welding tanks everywhere, even in the silo apparently.

I love the Michael Bay like explosions as well, but the only reason the criminals need this much propane is if they plan to host the world’s biggest BBQ or they are secretly run by the world’s best propane salesman.

Infinite Handcuffs?

In Battlefield Hardline you can use non lethal means to take down your enemies. This includes flashing your badge and handcuffing people to arrest them. You earn rewards for arresting high-value targets instead of killing them, which is a cool option.

Your character must have a pretty incredible utility belt, because as soon as he emerges from prison he has handcuffs to take down the bad guys. He only took down two, so perhaps he is using the handcuffs he took off of himself and his imprisoned pal.

Pocket Zipline

At some point you steal a gun capable of shooting rope so that you can pull yourself up to the top of a tower, and then out  of the gun and your pocket is a zipline. This is not just a rope anchored to the dilapidated tower you scaled, but a full on metal stand to attach a zipline to.

This came from your pocket!

Even with these Battlefield Hardline single player issues evident in the new 12-minute trailer, I’m looking forward to the game because I love the premise of a good cops and robbers style game.

    2015? You mean October 2014.

Might be a little on the picky side. :)
That’s the thing with these games, they have to find some balance between that realistic/immersive feel and fun. I agree about the propane tank point, though. That seems to be a trend in singleplayer FPS campaigns to have propane tanks/explosive barrels strategically placed, and it has always felt odd. The zipline appearing from nowhere is also a bit strange, but I think I can forgive that because it would be a fun escape.

Battlefield Hardline was pretty fun, the problem is the game will come out and have just as many bugs as the previous version. If they can fix all that before the release I’ll buy it.
