Today at a conference in CES Aereo announced that it will bring its live TV streaming options to 22 more cities in 2013.
Aereo is currently only available in New York City, where the company lets users access antennas stationed in the city so they can watch over-the-air TV content from their iOS device or desktop web browser. In 2013 the company will expand to a number of new cities across the U.S., with most new cities on the East Coast and Midwest.
The streaming TV company offers a number of payment plans ranging fron $1 per day to $80 a year. Users can also try the service free for one hour before deciding to buy it. All plans also include DVR access so users can record shows they want to watch later. Like a cable box, Aereo lets users watch one program while recording another at the same time.
The full list of new cities that Aereo will soon support is:
- Washington, D.C.
- Kansas City
- Salt Lake City
- Madison, Wis
Unfortunately for users who travel often, Aereo will only work within city limits, so users can’t access local channels from their home town while traveling in another city. It’s not clear if users can watch content from other Aereo cities when visiting, however.
Aereo is a great service for cord cutters who still want to watch network TV shows or sporting events. Aereo users on an iPad or iPhone can use an Apple TV and AirPlay to play the live TV on their HDTV, like they would when watching TV with a cable subscription.
The Aereo service doesn’t give users access to every channel imaginable, but paired with other services like Hulu Plus and Netflix it can give many users more than enough content on a variety of devices.
