Amazon announced their new lineup of Kindle eReaders with a new Kindle Paperwhite, while lowering the price of their simple Kindle and Kindle Touch eInk ebook readers.
They discounted the older models much like Apple does with their previous generation devices like the iPad 2 at a $100 off. Amazon dropped their prices by $10 making the eBook readers a great value.
The three Kindle eBook readers will look and function exactly like the earlier models with unnamed minor upgrades. The primary difference comes in the price. They will offer the Kindles at the following price points:
- $69 – The simplest Kindle with advertising to subsidize the price. See our review from last fall when it first shipped.
- $79 – Kindle Touch that used to cost $89 and comes with a touch screen replacing the buttons that older generations used to navigate. Here’s our review from last year.
- $139 – Kindle Touch 3G that works just like the other Kindle Touch but offers free 3G Whispersync so users can download books without needing a Wi-Fi signal
Amazon will ship these Kindles on September 14, so be sure not to hit the above links and buy one till then or you’ll get the older versions at the higher prices.
The $69 cost makes these cheapest devices almost a throw away device or an impulse buy. Suddenly a device that, just a couple of years ago you’d never buy for someone else unless you loved them, becomes a gift someone might buy for a co-worker or friend.
If interested please look at our reviews from last year linked in the list above since they’ll likely work and look the same. I called the Kindle Touch the best eInk Ebook reader ever. Until I see the Kindle Paperwhite, I’d stick to that.
