With last year’s final sales numbers proving that potential buyers will respond in droves when there’s an Xbox One price cut available, Microsoft seems to be wasting no time in taking advantage. Earlier today Microsoft revealed another Xbox One price cut, this time-saving buyers big money on the cost of purchasing an Xbox One with a Kinect 2 sensor.
Microsoft revealed the new Xbox One price cut on its website this afternoon in a surprise post on Xbox Wire. From February 8th to February 21st and most big gaming retailers will offer the Xbox One with Kinect 2 sensor for $449. That’s $50 less than what the Xbox One with Kinect 2 sensor costs right now. Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart will offer the savings. The Microsoft Store will let shoppers take advantage of this Xbox One price cut, just like it does the $349.99 bundle that Microsoft is already offering.
Strictly speaking, the Xbox One with Kinect 2 sensor bundle is the best Xbox One you can buy today. The included Kinect 2 sensor allows the Xbox One to communicate with televisions, audio equipment and cable boxes. Its infrared blaster is how users are able to change the channel in the Live TV app with just a simple voice command. The Xbox One also uses Kinect to identify which Xbox Live account should be assigned to which controller. Motion games like Dance Central Spotlight use the Kinect 2 to track player’s movements. Dragon Age: Inquisition allows users to give their in-game commands with just a controller.
Separately, the Kinect 2 sensor for Xbox One costs $149.99 and includes a Dance Central Spotlight. Dance Central Spotlight is also included in this bundle.
Each Xbox One bundle comes with everything users need to get started. A wireless controller with batteries is included along with a single HDMI cable and a power cable. Potential buyers will probably want to invest some of that savings in a battery pack for that included Xbox One controller or a subscription to Xbox Live Gold. Xbox Live Gold costs $9.99 a month or $60 a year and it’s the only way users will be able to play video games online with their friends and family. Right now, there’s only one Xbox One bundle available and it includes a free copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity and Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag. The Xbox One also comes with a basic Xbox One Chat Headset for in-game chat. Buyers who pick up this bundle can also use the Kinect to voice chat instead of the headset.
All told, another Xbox One price cut won’t hurt anything. Microsoft was able to ride an Xbox One price cut to sales dominance against the PS4 in the United States during the holidays. Presumably, it’s trying to do so again here.
Quickly though, Microsoft is starting to hurt itself. Instead of introducing a permanent Xbox One price cut, Microsoft keeps temporarily lowering the price, spurring sales for a bit. It then reintroduces the normal price. It’s getting very hard to nail down the Xbox One’s price. You never know when the Xbox One is on sale and when it isn’t. For example, many thought that the Xbox One with Kinect 2 bundle was already on sale after Microsoft cut the price of the base model back in January. It wasn’t and presumably it won’t be after this Xbox One price cut expires.
Recently released titles for the Xbox One cost $60, but many games released earlier than a few months ago are heavily discounted. Users will need an internet connection to setup the Xbox One and install their first update.
