Apple Announces New iMac Lineup
Today, at its special event at the California Theater in San Jose, Apple finally announced next-generation of iMac which will replaced the companies aging line of iMac desktop computers.
Apple’s Phil Schiller said that the company has “had 7 generations of the iMac, each one better than the last” and on paper, these new iMacs look like they will be vastly superior than the last version.
The new iMac features an edge that is 5mm thin which is 80% thinner than the previous lineup of iMac models. The device was built using called friction stir welding which offers more durability than the previous models.
Apple has announced two new versions of the iMac.
Apple has now laminated the new display, which is 45% thinner than the previous model, to the glass – the first time that it has ever done so. The display will feature two different display configurations, both of which will be IPS in quality.
The first, is a 27-inch display that will feature 2550 x 1440 resolution. In addition Apple will be offering a smaller 21-inch display that features 1920 x 1080 resolution. The displays will feature 75% less reflection thanks to a plasma deposition process.
There is a FaceTime HD front-facing camera, stereo sound that is improved over the last generation even with the slimmer design, up to 3TB of storage space and options of i5 or i7 core processors.
Apple’s new iMacs also feature four USB 3 ports, a headphone jack, SD card, Thunderbolt and Gigabyte Ethernet. There is also an option for a new Apple Fusion Drive which features both a 128 SDD and a 1TB or a 3TB HDD and will be fused together with software. Documents will sit on the HDD while core applications will be stored on the SSD. The disks will do this automatically.
Both will, of course, run on Apple’s new OS X Mountain Lion operating system.
The 21-inch iMac will cost $1299 and the the 27-inch iMac will run a little more expensive at $1799. The two iMacs have different shipping dates however. The 21-inch iMac will start shipping in November while the larger 27-inch iMac will start shipping in December, likely ahead of the holidays.
No specific in-store release dates were given.

Must say not impressed. Had expected upgraded processors, RAM, USB-3, that sort of thing, but otherwise unchanged (as iMac design is perfect as is, otherwise). The hatch at back of 27″ is good idea, but why not also on 21″? I store files on CD’s, DVD’s, why do Mac think it’s obsolete? I like having back-up install CD’s, can I trust AppleStore or whatever it’s called when I need it? Will it cost extra to re-install, fix bugs? I refuse to use Cloud anyway: when (and it is WHEN) Cloud goes bust you lose the lot. No thank you, I want reliable back-up …in my hand. And all your files are open to hacking. I’ve no need for ‘ultra-thin’ or lighter on a desktop, it’s not anyway, just as thick in centre, just slim on edges. It seems to me they’re using laptop internals for all models, saving money by not having the more robust ‘pro’ components from before. Will it last as long under pressure? I’m not sure. My iBook G4 and eMac are getting long in tooth, old technology/apps, but still good workers, was thinking of upgrading. I’m inclined to look around for the old model iMac at the right price. Also didn’t like Apple scrapping the 17″ MBP, was hoping the price would drop on the old model. As said: not impressed. Not worth the wait.
