Apple Introduces Free App of the Week Program

Published

Apple recently made a few changes to the iOS App Store, including a free “App of the Week” program.

According to Gamezebo, Apple now has “Editor’s Choice” apps in the App Store as opposed to “App of the Week” and “Game of the Week.” The store still highlights apps and games with “Editor’s Choice,” but the name is different. “App of the Week” now seems dedicated to free games.

Apple hasn’t made any official announcements, but yesterday the App Store Twitter account tweeted “Cut the Rope: Experiments is our #FreeAppoftheWeek.” It seems Apple now has its own free app program. We’re not sure if the program will feature apps that are free for a week, or if Apple is just highlighting free apps. We’ll need to wait for some sort of pattern to establish itself before we can say for sure.

So far the Free “App of the Week” only appears on the iPhone and iPod touch, with no such promotion on the iPad. That does make sense, though, as iPad games rarely drop in price to free unless they switch to a freemium model.

For the first week of “Editor’s Choice” Apple chose the new Facebook Camera and Extreme Skater for the iPhone and iPod touch. On the iPad, Sketchbook Ink and Air Mail are this week’s “Editor’s Choice” apps.

The final minor change to the App Store is the removal of Staff Picks apps. Previously, at the bottom of the App Store in iTunes and on the iPad there was a section for apps selected by Apple staff.

That section is now replaced by Apple’s rotating themed collections of apps.
