Apple Sells 5 Million iPhone 5 Units in One Weekend

After the first weekend of iPhone 5 availability Apple is ready to share some numbers, and they’re unsurprisingly big numbers.

Today Apple announced that it sold a total of 5 million iPhone 5 units over the course fo just three days. Those sales mean Apple ran out of its initial run of phones, which is why many iPhones won’t ship until October. We’ve heard Apple is shipping a few units earlier than expected, but those new shipments are apparently from the second production run.

The iPhone 5 is currently available in nine countries including the U.S., Canada, Australia, the UK, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. We don’t know how many iPhones Apple sold in each country, only that Apple sold 5 million between the nine countries.

Apple is poised to sell even more iPhone 5s this weekend as the phone will release in 22 more countries on September 28. That list includes Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

September 28 is also the day when Cricket and C Spire Wireless will start to carry the iPhone 5. Cricket is the first U.S. carrier to carry a prepaid iPhone 5, and C Spire is one of the cheapest options for potential iPhone 5 users.

The iPhone 5 is on pace to meet analyst predictions of 10 million units sold before the end of the quarter, as long as Apple has enough supply, the demand for the device is high enough. Whenever Apple does hit that milestone we’ll surely hear about it. If not, we’ll likely get another iPhone 5 status update at the next quarterly earning call.
