Xbox 360, PS4 and PS Vita users have been hunting down foes and pulling the strings of non-fiction leaders for years, but only in Assassin’s Creed Unity will they feel like they’re actually at liberty to do what must be done, the way they want to.
A new eleven minute long trailer released by Ubisoft during Gamescom 2014 reveals why Assassin’s Creed Unity could be the best in the franchise yet. In the video users aren’t treated to yet another rehash of the history and ramifications of the French Revolution. Instead, viewers watch as Ubisoft shows off the single-player experience that’ll come included in the final version of the game coming October 28th.
With Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ubisoft is stepping away from the linear campaign missions that have dominated past games. Dubbed Black Boxes, the game will now simply tell users to achieve an objective without forcing them to do it one way. If a user isn’t good at stealth they can choose to be more brazen and hope that they live through the mission. In Assassin’s Creed Unity users aren’t playing in a mission, they’re playing in a sand box. Users can take part in side objectives that have an effect on Black Boxes if they want. These are called Mod Missions.
In the Black Box mission shown off in today’s Assassin’s Creed Unity trailer the player has the opportunity to kill his target early on, but decides he’d rather follow him to get additional information about what is going on instead. Just that decision alone has an effect on how the rest of the Black Box plays.
Black Boxes aren’t the only place users are getting a bit more freedom to do what they choose. Earlier this year Ubisoft revealed that changes in the way it creates levels now allow users to get from tall buildings without having to always leap into a bale of hay or water. Assassin’s Creed Unity players will also get to climb buildings just as freely as they can repel down them. It’s a small change that’ll have big consequences for users creating a plan to complete Black Box missions. Alone it makes tailing enemies a lot easier than it’s been in past games.
The video also shows off a new stealth mode that players are allowed to activate on the fly. When in stealth mode characters crouch and move as silently as possible. Ubisoft likens assassin’s in stealth mode in Assassin’s Creed Unity to predators stalking prey. Users can combine stealth mode with smoke bombs and other tricks to take down their pray and quickly move on.
Paris is shown off in stylish form during the video too. Users also get a decent look at the seamless way Ubisoft has managed to stitch together outside areas and inside locations.
All told, this video reveals just why Assassin’s Creed Unity is going to be such a big deal when it arrives on the Xbox One and PS4 later this year. Ubisoft has addressed every concern, every play mechanic that made past games in the series a bit frustrating. The mission objectives that once felt like shackles are gone, users can sneak around at all times and loading screens don’t pollute the open-world feel of the game. It’s truly a next-generation gaming experience.
Unfortunately, being a true next-generation gaming experience means users won’t be playing this game on of the older consoles. In making these changes Ubisoft freed its developers from the shackles of legacy consoles. In short, the Xbox 360 and PS4 won’t be getting the game.
Instead, users who own those consoles will have the option to pick up Assassin’s Creed Rogue. That game doesn’t seem as ambitious as what users get with Unity but there will be a new character and new places to explore.
