AT&T Got Some Splainin’ To Do

It’s on. It’s off. It’s on. It’s off. It’s leading to someone getting fired, I’m guessing. For some time now we’ve been hearing that AT&T was going to offer free WiFi to iPhone users at Starbucks. In fact, it was prematurely announced in May and apparently prematurely working before it disappeared.

Then this morning there was word that it was on again. There seemed to be much rejoicing until the brakes got slammed down hard once again. I pity the poor guy or gal who let it slip this time.

Here’s what the notice said before it was pulled:

“AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi hot-spot network with more than 17,000 hot spots, including Starbucks. Now users can relax and access music, e-mail, and Web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location.”

So, for the moment there is no free WiFi from AT&T for iPhone users at Starbucks.

I think AT&T is just miffed that they can’t get their hands on any iPhones to sell and are holding back.
