Rocksteady, the game development studio responsible for creating most of the Batman: Arkham franchise and revitalizing super hero video games, has just released a new trailer for the finale of its Batman: Arkham saga. This trailer shows users taking on bad guys with the power and weaponry of the Batmobile in Batman: Arkham Knight.
The trailer starts with a look at the newly refreshed Gotham City. As users are treated to shots of the city a voice can be heard urging citizens to abandon Gotham City for safer pastures before the voice, who is presumably, the Arkham Knight, unleashes their worst fears.
Batman himself is then shown suiting up to take on crime in the city after he’s been signaled. The shots of Batman don’t reveal much about the character’s new capabilities, but the suit he’s seen putting on is more high-tech than what users saw in Batman: Arkham City. This could point to him having many more cybernetic gadgets in this game, however there’s not much confirming that in this trailer.
Batman is heard telling someone over the radio that he’s evening the odds and calls in the Batmobile for back up. The rest of the clip shows a player using the Batmobile to launch Batman and take on enemies around him. There’s also a clip where panels on the Batmobile open to reveal guns and a missile launcher to take on enemies. At the end, Batman is scene on the ground after being punched in the face by the Arkham Knight wearing some kind of cybernetic suit. As Batman lays on the ground the Arkham Knight can be heard telling the citizens of Gotham that “There is no savior.” He also mentions that there is “no more hope and no more Batman.”
The trailer in itself would be noteworthy if was made of just cut scenes. Batman: Arkham Knight is expected to be one of this year’s tent pole console games. In short, Rocksteady’s reputation and the quality of past games has almost guaranteed that Batman: Arkham Knight will be a hit this fall.
The key thing here is in the trailer’s name. Rocksteady refers to it as the “Arkham Knight Gameplay trailer.” That’s interesting because the entire video looks less like a gameplay trailer and more like a 2 minute series of videos. If this is a true gameplay trailer and we’re seeing in-game graphics than Batman: Arkham Knight is going to be one gorgeous game.
That Batman: Arkham Knight would look incredible when it debuts this fall makes sense though. When Rocksteady announced it was preparing a new entry in the series for release this year it also confirmed reports that it had no plans to introduce a version of Batman: Arkham Knight for last generation consoles. Like with next year’s Halo 5: The Guardians, users who want to play Batman: Arkham Knight will need to upgrade.
Rocksteady did say that users would be able to use the Batmobile as a sort of in-game weapon when it confirmed that the game wouldn’t be coming to the Xbxo 360 or PS3. Presumably, the setup will follow the now world-famous template from past Batman: Arkham games. Users will be dropped into an open world – in this case Gotham City – and tasked with meeting objectives and taking down crooks. Users slowly build up an arsenal of gadgets that they can use to assist them in combat and finding collectibles. Batman: Arkham City included freeze grenades to incapacitate enemies, for example.
All three installments have included an expanding list of villains for players to take on. Villains in past games have included Two Face, who is also in this trailer with the Arkham Knight, Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze. It’s unclear if any or all of those characters will return for this game.
Leaks from GameStop indicate that Batman: Arkham Knight will arrive on store shelves on October 14th for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
