We’ve heard a lot about of rumors in the past about Apple coming out with an iRing, but Belkin has actually made it happen.
The Belkin Ring is a “cloud control device” that activates different shortcuts around the home using simple finger gestures, and it works with a handful of popular products and software, including Facebook, Twitter, and Evernote, as well as your television and lights in your house.
The Ring connects wirelessly to Belkin’s Ring Hub, which then connects to your WiFi network and your various devices around the house, allowing you to control them with ease. The Ring also communicates via Bluetooth 4.0.
The Ring itself is made out of zinc and is layered with tinned copper on the surface. We tried it on ourselves on the show floor and it’s quite big. It’s really thick, which isn’t too surprising considering that the company had to fit a bunch of circuitry and wireless radios on the inside, but it’s certainly not comfortable by any means.
The Ring does come in multiple sizes, as small as a 19mm inner diameter and up to a 23.8mm inner diameter, so it’s definitely not a one-size-fits-most type of product.
The ring consists of a touch sensor, which is the small round dot on the surface of the ring that is used to activate certain things, on top of the finger gestures.
Belkin says that the Ring’s battery can last up to 3 days on a single charge, but depending on how often you’d use it, it could be anywhere from 1-2 days on average.
The Belkin Ring will launch at some point in March, but no price point has been announced yet. However, the company will have to do a lot of convincing in order to get people to buy this thing.
