The CEO of BlackBerry, formerly known as RIM, has confirmed that the BlackBerry 10 update will indeed be coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet though Thorsten Heins did not commit to a specific date.
At today’s BlackBerry 10 launch event, RIM, now known as BlackBerry, introduced its BlackBerry 10 operating system to go along with its first two BlackBerry 10 smartphones, the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Q10. Those devices will be hitting shelves in various regions around the world in the days ahead, starting with the United Kingdom tomorrow, and they will usher in the new era of BlackBerry.
BlackBerry however has not forgotten about its past, specifically, the BlackBerry PlayBook, its tablet that it launched to compete with the likes of the iPad back in 2011. And despite being nearly two years old, it appears that RIM has some future plans for those still holding on to their PlayBook.
According to Heins, by way of The Verge, “all existing Playbooks” will receive the upgrade to BlackBerry 10 at some point in the future. That is, at least, the plan right now. Heins did not specify exactly when the BlackBerry PlayBook would receive its BlackBerry 10 upgrade, leaving owners wondering when or maybe even if the upgrade will roll out.
BlackBerry 10 of course is RIM’s brand new operating system that will be taking the place of BlackBerry QNX operating system that exists currently on the PlayBook. It’s unclear if all of the features will be bestowed upon PlayBook owners but fingers should be crossed, hoping that that is the case.
BlackBerry 10 delivers a new user interface along with a host of new applications including BlackBerry Balance for those who use their device for enterprise, BlackBerry Hub which delivers email, calendar and social networking accounts in one place, a new BlackBerry virtual keyboard, BlackBerry Flow for switching between applications and more.
All in all, it’s BlackBerry’s most ambitious software effort in quite some time and that should have PlayBook owners excited.
Those looking for a new BlackBerry tablet shouldn’t get their hopes up though as Heins virtually dismissed the idea of any imminent tablet saying that it would be hard for the company to do from a “cost to profit” standpoint.
