Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Trailer Shows New Survival Mode

Slowly but surely, the time left until Xbox One and PS4 owners can pick up Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on store shelves is winding down and developer Activision is pulling out all the stops in convincing users to buy. Earlier this week Activision revealed Survival Mode, a in-game cooperative mode that’ll let Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare players team up with their friends and fight ever increasing swarms of enemies.

A new trailer and accompanying page revealed Survival Mode for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The premise is almost too simple, users will team up with their friends and take on enemies in a specific setting. The longer teams last the more enemies will come at them. According to a page published by Activision about Survival Mode, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare players can expect enemies to include soldiers that have the same abilities as they have, killer robots and – strangely, enough – soldiers who have killer dogs as partners. Before a Survival Mode match begins, players will need to choose from one of three tiers: light, heavy and specialist. Choosing a tier will sort of work like a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Each will have some advantages or disadvantages depending on a user’s preference.

Cooperative multiplayer with an escalating difficulty level isn’t exactly new. Other games have tried it to pretty good results. Titles in the Gears of War franchise have had this type of mode for years. Microsoft’s own Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach included a similar mode called Firefight. Players couldn’t choose between different player styles and types, though. Firefight was generally well received by critics even if it too wasn’t necessarily revolutionary.

In the trailer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare we see users working through their fair share of enemies in Survival Mode. We’re also treated to some new scenes from the game’s campaign. This new bit of story doesn’t reveal a lot, but it does point to a major plot twist in the game.

What we know about Call of Duty Advanced Warfare’s story is that it takes place in a not-too-distant future where world governments have effectively licensed fighting in wars to businesses. At the center of this war contractor economy is Atlas, a company ran by Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare star Kevin Spacey. In this new trailer we see Spacey’s character ordering an attack. When the government official asks on whose authority is he acting, he declares “On my authority.”

When Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launches on November 4th it’s expected to set records. Last year’s Call of Duty entry was the highlight of the fall gaming season. The game set records in terms of sales. As Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare adds tons of new load-outs and futuristic weapons, it’s expected to do even better.

Special exoskeletons will allow users to climb buildings. Other weapons will include some futuristic laser weapons. Giant robots will also be available for users to take on enemies with. Even shields in the game have seen some attention – one demonstrated in an earlier trailer actually followers the user as he walks across the battlefield. When the player is ready to fire, the shield lets itself down.
