Comcast Allows You to Stream Video on Demand with iPad Xfinity App

Published

Comcast is hoping that you won’t begin to cut the cord when it comes to cable subscriptions, and the company is now making good on its promise to allow users to watch cable content on an iPad via the Xfinity app.

At this point, though, only video on demand programming is available and users still can’t stream live TV on the iPad. However, you can watch your VOD content anywhere over a WiFi connection. Live TV streaming is expected in future iterations of the Xfinity app.

Engadget is reporting that the Xfinity app offers a choice of only ten networks at this time, including BBC America, HBO, SHO, and others. The blog says that content was good and video started playing right away.

It’s cool you can have these types of mobility options with Comcast, but it’s only for the On Demand…if you want to stream live TV you have to be at home within your personal wifi network. As a DISH customer and employee I use their TV Everywhere app and can watch live OR recorded shows anywhere I can get a 3G connection, and any time I want. I’m also not limited to a tablet…I can also use a laptop or my smart-phone.

Jo, thanks for the reply! I’ve taken a close look at the Xfinity app and while respect anyone’s choice, there were just too many limitations for me. I don’t like being confined to just a tablet…I watch a TON of TV on my iphone. Also, the Live streaming only works when at home…I don’t need to a mobility option while I’m at home, I have a very nice 52 inch HD TV for when I’m at home. It’s everywhere else that counts, and unfortunately a Comcast or “Xfinity” customer will not be able to stream and watch Live TV unless they are already at home.

Does the on demand only work on your iPad if you are not at home? I want to use my iPad to watch on demand tv series in my bedroom (only has a regular cable) but all my ipad does it turn into a remote and change the living room tv with dvr to the on demand program I picked to watch. My son was in the middle of watching a movie on that tv and it changed to my show that I was trying to watch on my iPad. Comcast customer support wasn’t helpful. How do you get on demand to work on an iPad independently of the tv that has the on demand and drv?
