Corning goes Gorilla on LG X300

While at CES 2010, a few of us were looking for something “out of the ordinary”, something that was tech related, but not necessarily a new gadget.  We wanted something that was a good idea, but not overly recognized by the gadget loving public.  We found it in the form of Corning’s Gorilla Glass.

Corning is name associated with glass and ceramics.  I am sure some of you have Corningware stored somewhere at home.  But, what have they do to with gadgets?  Corning has developed Gorilla Glass for portable devices.  What is Gorilla Glass?

From Corning:

Corning Gorilla glass is an environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass designed specifically to function as a protective window for portable display devices. What really sets Gorilla glass apart from the competition is that it’s both strong and damage resistant.

This new glass has now been designed into the new LG X300 mobile PC.  This is a first for Corning Gorilla Glass.  With this new glass technology, it will definitely make notebooks, netbooks, and other mobile devices lighter as well as have a cleaner display overall.

Here is the full press release from Corning:

Corning Supplies LG Electronics with Gorilla® Glass

for New Ultra-Slim Premium Mobile PC

CORNING, N.Y. — March 15, 2010 – Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today that Corning’s Gorilla® glass has been designed into the LG X300, a newly released premium mobile PC.  This lightweight device packs portable computing technology into an ultra-slim form.  It measures just 17.5 millimeters (mm) thick and weighs roughly 2 pounds, giving users convenient portability. Corning’s Gorilla glass enables the unique edge-to-edge cover design and allows the device to remain thin and lightweight.

Harrison Park, general manager, PC Division, LG Electronics said “Slim, lightweight mobile PCs will be the main trend this year. By using Corning’s Gorilla glass, we were able to design a thinner device with a durable and strong display.”

“Laptop makers are challenged with designing thinner and lighter devices and Corning’s Gorilla glass is helping them succeed,” said Jim Steiner, senior vice president, Corning Specialty Materials. “The unique properties of Gorilla glass allow for reduced thickness and weight without compromising durability.”

Gorilla glass is an environmentally friendly protective window used in high-end display devices including cellular phones, laptop and tablet computers, and mobile devices. With a variety of available thicknesses, ranging from 0.5mm up to 2.0mm, Gorilla glass offers a lightweight and durable design that compliments the needs of premium devices such as the LG X300. This aluminosilicate glass is produced with Corning’s proprietary fusion-draw process, which enables the production of uniform thin sheets with a pristine surface and is also adaptable to scalable sheet sizes for optimal throughput. During finishing, Gorilla glass undergoes achemical strengthening process that gives it the unique properties which make it especially suited for use as a durable, scratch-resistant liquid crystal display (LCD) cover.  These benefits allow Corning customers to optimize their device design and fabrication efficiencies.

Can they make sheets big enough for an aquarium for a couple of whales?

The demo of people beating on a sheet of the stuff at CES was impressive. Anything that prevents screen damage is good. I hope tablet/laptop manufacturers see it as cost effective.

Great post Amy. Motion has been shipping Gorilla glass since last June on the F5 and C5. It has lived up to its promise for us. The response from customers has been very good, both in terms of durability and usability. Corning is definitely the industry leader in this area. Here is a cool video that highlights how durable the displays are:

I hope this shows up more places soon. I want this on my next device (laptop or phone).

AND I hope companies advertise that they have gorilla glass in their products. I hate it that devices are always listed as “touch screen display” or “WXGA display”. It’s important to us techies to know what parts make up the whole product.
