Slowly, the amount of activities users will have to participate in when the Destiny Beta arrives is starting to come into focus. New reports are pegging a few story missions and more as part of the download that should begin going out to owners of Sony’s PS4 game console later this week.
More information about the Destiny Beta surfaced again over the weekend on Reddit. A snippet of a note sent to managers of gaming retail stores reveals some new information about the beta. The note mentions that users can expect four story chapters and four different multiplayer maps to be available in the Destiny Beta. The note also mentions that users will be able to create their own customized Guardian in the Destiny Beta.
For those following along, this might sound like basic information, but it’s not. As recently as last week Lars Bakken of Bungie, Destiny’s developer, mentioned in a video with IGN that only the games Capture The Flag-like Control multiplayer mode would be available during the Destiny Beta. Many users were worried that they weren’t going to get to experience a lot of the game during the time allotted for users to test the game and help Bungie track the title’s performance.
Having plenty of activities to complete during the Destiny Beta is key. So too, is any details the Destiny Beta can provide about the game’s story-line. To date, we don’t know much about the Guardians or the mysterious white orb that is seen protecting Earth in many of the game’s trailers. We do know that the Guardians and that white orb are the last thing protecting humans and Earth from final destruction.
In order to make it into the Destiny Beta PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 users will need to have pre-ordered the game at a participating games retailer like GameStop. That being said, PS4 users don’t even have to leave the house to pre-order a copy of the game, The PlayStation Network allows users to place a pre-order digitally. The digital store then allows users to download the final copy of the game before it becomes available. That’s something that’s not available on the Xbox One.
Users who are hoping to savor every last moment of the final version of the game are definitely better off not participating in the Destiny Beta if this report is true. We don’t yet know how many game hours the final version of Destiny will be, however four story chapters sounds like enough to ruin a few surprises that might be better left until the game’s launch on September 9th.
As for the multiplayer maps in the Destiny Beta, Bungie revealed those in videos last week. All of them are set in places that’ll look very familiar to players. One is a mining facility on the Moon. Another is on a terraformed Mars. Each of the maps have special weapons and vehicles designed to get players into the action and keep them there. That being said, each map is absolutely huge and visually stunning.
Xbox One and Xbox 360 users excited about the Destiny Beta’s arrival are better off keeping their excitement to a minimum for the next week. Earlier this year Bungie confirmed that only PlayStation users would be able to get the Destiny Beta on the day it launches. Instead of playing alongside PS4 and PS3 users on July 17th, owners of Microsoft’s consoles won’t be allowed into the Destiny Beta until July 23rd. That’s roughly four days before the beta ends on July 27th. In addition to this, PS4 and PS3 owners who purchase one of the limited versions of the game or the game’s expansion packs will get additional content that Xbox One and Xbox 360 users won’t see until the fall of 2015 at the earliest.
The final version of Destiny launches September 9th on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PS4. Bungie hasn’t shared any plans to make Destiny available to PC users.
