Use Cover to Stay Alive

This goes without saying but we'll say it anyway. If you're alive, you're able to gain XP points. If you're dead, you're not. There are plenty of ways to avoid getting killed (running from fights you can't win, upgrading gear) but there's one lesser known ability that could help you win out a battle and gain XP.
