Same goes for picking locks.

There are locked doors and safes everywhere. If you successfully pick them, you'll get loot but you'll also get a bit of experience. 

We recommend upping your lockpicking skill early in the game to advanced for this very reason. I bumped up my lockpicking skill level to master right when it opened up and its provided me with tons of ammo, materials, and more.
