Foursquare goes to the Olympics

vancouver-olympics-2010-language-test-onlineToday starts the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.  Time to watch all that snow, then again, if you live up north or over in Texas, you just have to look out your front door.

If you want to keep up with all the action, there are plenty of web sites to assist you, including the main site, and the NBC site.  But why go “old school” with web sites, why not use our social networking friends from Foursquare?

Foursquare has teamed up with the New York Times to make this years Winter Olympics something special.

The Times will be offering recommendations for restaurants, popular attractions, shopping and nightlife in Vancouver, Whistler and the town of Squamish. The tips will be pulled from the Times’ travel and entertainment coverage on the cities. Foursquare users that check in at one of the suggested venues will earn a special New York Times Olympic badge.

Its a great way to tie in the sites of Vancouver, the New York Times coverage, and social networking.  I am sure more events will try these type of tie-ins as the year progresses.

For me, I wish I could be there so I can become the mayor of Vancouver!  Or at least get a gold medal in freezing.

Freeze, you won’t. It’s a balmy 8 degrees celsius (46 degrees fahrenheit) here in Vancouver. Not such good news for the local ski slope, though. We’re encouraging each spectator to do their part and bring a tray of ice cubes from home to the snowboarding/moguls venue to crush up and make snow… :)
