9 Common Note 3 Lollipop Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update brings a number of big changes including Google’s new Material Design. The update’s also brought some features that aren’t listed on the change log: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop problems. With Android 5.0 problems starting to swirl, we want to take a look at some potential fixes for these issues.

Back in December, Samsung started rolling out the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update. The update represents the device’s first major Android update and as expected, it brings some huge changes to the Galaxy S5. In the weeks since, Samsung’s started rolling out several other Galaxy Lollipop updates including the Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update, the device’s second software upgrade.

The Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update, like the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update, is a big one. And while the Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade and its features are working out fine for some users, we’ve also started to hear about Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop problems.

LG G3 vs Galaxy Note 3 - 4

We’ve spoken to some Galaxy Note 3 owners who are running into Android 5.0 Lollipop problems after moving to Samsung’s latest update. We’ve pointed out a number of these Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop issues already though the list continues to grow as more and more Galaxy Note 3 users receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

We’re still not sure when Samsung or carriers like T-Mobile will roll out their first Android 5.0 Lollipop bug fix update so we want to do our part and help try and solve some of these issues ahead these releases.

Here, we take a look at some of the Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop problems that have popped up for users in recent weeks and offer some possible fixes for these issues. These will help T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop users and they should prove beneficial to AT&T, U.S. Cellular, Verizon, and Sprint Galaxy Note 3 users as well.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Installation Problems

Often times, Galaxy users run into issues before the update gets on board. We’ve heard about Lollipop installation problems on both the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 and we have a feeling that we’ll also see some Galaxy Note 3 users run into issues down the road. Luckily, there are some things to try if the software refuses to install.

Samsung outlines a number of steps to take if the download process is unable to complete. For those that want to hear it from the horse’s mouth, here are the steps that Samsung recommends if Android 5.0 Lollipop doesn’t install properly the first time around.

Galaxy Note 3 users that have more than enough storage available, will want to ensure that the device is charged up to at least 50% before the download and installation process begins. If that still doesn’t work, try downloading and installing over a fast Wi-Fi connection. If there are still issues after that, let the phone die, recharge to 100% and try installing again. That has worked for us in the past.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Battery Life Problems

Battery life problems are among the most common issues that impact devices after a major release. That’s why it hasn’t been surprising to see Galaxy Note 3 users complain about abnormal battery drain after the shift to Android 5.0 Lollipop. These complaints don’t come as too much of a surprise given how poorly the Lollipop update is performing on some Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 models.

Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop battery life problems are among the biggest problems effecting users after moving to Android 50 and it looks like these same issues are affecting the Galaxy Note 3’s firmware. While there is no guaranteed fix, there are certainly a few things to try before taking the phone into a store.

LG G3 vs Galaxy Note 3 - 4

In our experience with major Android updates, third-party apps are the cause of most post-release Android battery life problems. Apps are the first place we would look if the Galaxy Note 3 starts exhibiting bad battery life after the move up to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

First, we recommend booting into Safe Mode. Booting the Galaxy Note 3 into Safe Mode will disable third-party applications which will allow users to identify potential culprits. Isolating applications will take a lot of time (you’ll need to do some uninstalling) but it’s worth a shot if the Galaxy Note 3 battery doesn’t hold up after the move to Android 5.0.

Here’s how to boot the Galaxy Note 3 into Safe Mode:

  1. Power down the device. Then, press & hold the Power button and volume down key.
  2. Once it boots up, you can let go of the power button but keep the volume key held down.
  3. When you have successfully entered into Safe Mode, you will notice the text ‘Safe Mode’ at the bottom left corner of the screen.

We recommend keeping the Samsung Galaxy Note 3’s applications updated with the latest bug fixes and enhancements. Make sure to gather feedback from fellow users before doing so.

It’s also worth restarting the Galaxy Note 3 to see if that gets rid of the problem. This quick reboot will clear the cache and kill off services that might be eating away at the battery.

Users might also try disabling NFC and Bluetooth when they aren’t needed because they can damage battery life. We also suggest getting rid of live wallpapers. Live wallpapers have the potential to chew through battery in the background.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Wi-Fi Problems

Complaints about Wi-Fi connectivity after a major Android update are very common and while we haven’t seen widespread complaints about Galaxy Note 3 Wi-Fi issues, there’s a very good chance some users will run into problems when their updates arrive. Typically, Wi-Fi problems range from slow connections to lost connectivity when the device is in an area with a strong signal.

First, reboot the Galaxy Note 3. Users will also want to try rebooting the local router if that hasn’t been done in awhile. We recommend unplugging the router for a good 30 seconds and then plugging it back in. Users can do the same for your modem as well. If that doesn’t work, Galaxy Note 3 owners experiencing Wi-Fi problems might also consider updating the routers firmware. If those simple fixes do not work, it’s now time to head into the device’s settings.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Galaxy Note 3 - 006-X2

First, try forcing the device to forget the Wi-Fi network that’s posing problems. Head to the desired connection in Settings and select the Forget Network option. Once that’s done, users will then need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network with the password so make sure that it’s readily available.

It’s also worth going into Power Saving Mode to see if Wi-Fi restrictions are in place. To access Power Saving Mode, head into Settings and then into the Power Saving Mode option. This is a known fix for Wi-Fi issues.

If none of those fixes dislodge the Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Wi-Fi problems, we recommend updating applications. Users can also try booting into safe mode to see if apps are really the issue. If apps aren’t causing the problem then it’s probably worth trying another router to see if that helps.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems are also among the most common problems after major Android updates and we expect many Galaxy Note 3 users to encounter unstable Bluetooth connections.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 users that encounter problems should try shifting Bluetooth on and off. To do this, head into Settings and then Bluetooth and toggle the service off and then back on again after a few moments. If that doesn’t fix the problem, it’s time to forget Bluetooth connections. Head into Bluetooth and forget the problem device or devices. Then, reconnect.

Users trying to connect to a car, will need to consult the car’s manual to reset the car’s Bluetooth. The process is going to be different for each make and model, that’s why we recommend consulting the car’s manual. Once that connection has been reset and the connection’s been forgotten on the Galaxy Note 3, try reconnecting to see if it works.

If none of that works, we also recommend booting into Safe Mode (the instructions can be found above) which will disable third-party applications. This will allow users to check and see if apps are causing the Wi-Fi problems.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Overheating Problems

Overheating issues have been a common complaint amongst Galaxy users after the move to Lollipop and we expect them to impact more devices as the roll out continues.

This can happen when playing a game for a few hours straight but some users are saying that it’s happening without much provocation. Thankfully, there are a few fixes to try if the Galaxy Note 3 starts getting hot for no reason.

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Galaxy Note 3 - Cameras

First, try restarting the Galaxy Note 3. Leave it off for a minute or so and then boot it back up. If that doesn’t work, power it down again and this time, remove the battery and microSD card from the microSD card slot if there is one. Pop the battery back in without the microSD card in and see if that works. This has worked for us in the past.

If none of that works, we suggest booting into Safe Mode to see if it’s an app that’s causing problems. A rogue app could be overworking itself so it’s important to check to see if that’s what might be occurring.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Performance Problems

We’ve also been hearing about drops in performance after the arrival of Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is common after a major Android update and over the years we’ve picked up on a few potential fixes that seem to work.

Galaxy Note 3 users experiencing abnormal lag or sluggishness will be happy to know that there are an array of fixes to try and help stabilize the performance of Android. The first potential fix that we recommend is a process that will clear the Galaxy Note 3’s cache partition. To clear the cache partition on the device, follow these steps:

  • Turn the Galaxy Note 3 off.
  • Press and hold Home, Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the device vibrates.
  • When the Samsung logo appears, release them.
  • Tap Volume Down repeatedly until you Wipe Cache Partition. Select it with the power button. Select Yes.
  • Wait for the process to complete. It could take awhile.
  • Reboot your Galaxy Note 3.

We also recommend halting the use of live wallpapers, they can negatively impact performance. Users can also try toggling NFC off when it’s not in use because this often provides useful gains in performance.

Note 3 users can also try turning off animations if performance really starts taking a tumble. To do this, hold down on a blank space on the screen, go to the Home Screen Settings then Transition effect and select None. Users can also try disabling some applications through Application Manager in device settings.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop App Problems

Samsung notes that app issues are extremely common after big releases like Lollipop. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 users experiencing issues with applications can try a few things to jumpstart performance. First, try updating the problem app. There’s a good chance that the developer’s rolled out a bug fix so users be wise to give that a shot first.

The Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 performance is very close.

We also recommend reinstalling the application. We’ve seen success with this method several times in the past and it could resolve issues with app performance after Lollipop. If the problems continue, reach out to the developer and alert them to the problem. This will help them identify the problem and potentially fix it in a later update. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Touch More options
  2. Touch My apps > All
  3. Touch the application with the issues
  4. Scroll down to Developer
  5. Touch Send email to report the issue with the application developers

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop GPS Problems

GPS issues have been a common problem for many Galaxy Note 3 users on Android 4.4 KitKat and we would be surprised if we didn’t see complaints after the arrival of Android 5.0. There are a few fixes to try before contacting the service provider.

The first thing to do is to go into Settings, Location and then make sure Mode is set to High Accuracy. If that doesn’t solve the issue, it’s time to boot the phone into safe mode to see if a third-party application is causing the problem. We’ve had success with this in the past and it’s worth a shot if GPS starts acting up.

How to Fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Problems If Nothing Else Works

If nothing here works, it’s probably time to revert back to Android 4.4 KitKat. Or if that doesn’t sound appealing, factory reset the device.

Those looking to factory reset should note that it’s a time consuming process and Note 3 users will need to ensure that key files are backed up before starting. This process erases the entire phone and brings it back to the state that it was in when it first came out of the box.

To do this, go into SettingsUser & Backup, and select Backup and Reset. From there, select Factory Data Reset. From there, select Reset Device and then Delete All.

note-3

If for whatever reason that doesn’t work, users can also factory reset using the hardware keys on the phone. Here’s how to do that. It’s a far more difficult process. We recommend the above route if possible.

  • First, you’ll need to turn the Galaxy Note 3 off.
  • Once its off, press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power buttons together until you see an Android appear on the screen.
  • Once you see this, use the Volume down key to highlight the Wipe Data/Factory Reset option. Use the Power button to select it.
  • Use the Volume down key to select Yes – delete all user data and then use the Power button again to select it.
  • When you see the Reboot System Now option, you’ll know you’re on track. Use the Power button to select that option.
  • This will erase everything on the Galaxy Note 3 bringing it back to the state it was in when you first bought it. It also might fix the problems you’re having.

Sometimes, unorthodox fixes will work where common fixes fail. We also recommend taking a look at Android Central’s forums, one of our favorite Android-centric forums. For those still unable to fix Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop problems, we suggest getting in touch with the device’s service provider. If there isn’t one, get in contact with Samsung itself.

Lollipop is out now for Tmobile Samsung Note 3. Mine has been updating for an hour and my phone got so hot i had to put a fan on it. It’s at 532 of 950 apps, optimizing them. Be patient cuz it seems to get stuck on the start screen but it eventually optimizes your apps. Not sure about that’s done cuz I’m not there yet. It needs 1 gig memory.

back up your phone then factory reset it.

Lollipop 5.0 has degraded my otherwise super cool note 3 instead of actually upgrading it.
    Smart scroll is disabled.
    Silent mode is deactivated.
To name a few. The under skilled service support
Structure in India does not do much in reducing the agony the update brings along with it. Hope Samsung follows up with these bug fixes ASAP.

Lollipop is causing my device to overheat and it’s draining the battery. I was excited at first but now I’m disappointed. I hope the bugs get fixed right away.

Best thing to do is to back up the Note 3 using Kies and then take a reset. My phone has now started behaving.

How in the world do you get rid of the tmobile words in the top left of the screen? It used to be under the date and time, that was before the lolipop update! It’s annoying and I can’t get notification icons to show anymore.

I was quite happy with what I had. Why the hell they forced this garbage on me withoutme asking for it. The phone switches off in the middle of the night even if you have more than 50 % power when you hit the pillow. In what way is this better God only knows.

Sounds like you need to do a backup and then do a factory reset. That’s why I like doing my updates via kies or manually. OTA sometimes does that.

My widgets are all gone and there is not longer a Widgets section to install new ones. My text messages get sent days or hours after I send them and the overall appearance of this update is disgusting. Worst update ever! Im.switching to my old iPhone until I can exchange this now worthless phone for a new iPhone.

I don’t like this update one bit. I had owner info on the lock screen in case it was lost. Now no matter what I do, it doesn’t stay on there. The weather app will not stay off the lock screen. I’m totally dissatisfied with this update and I would like the old one back.

My wallpaper is gone, my timer has changed, my notifications now stack so that I can’t see what I have before clicking with no way to know if I want to save it for later. My folders are different, oh and while my Google account is signed on it won’t sync my calendar.

To go to recovery mode to be able to clear cache you have to hold (when phone is OFF) Power Button, Home Button and UP* Volume not the down one like said here.

    Note 3 900T.

As painful as it may be, try enjoying a completely fresh phone by doing a factory reset before installing Lollipop (or after). Samsung Kies backed up most of my apps and personal files beforehand. It worked great. Most all my apps and personal files were reloaded into Lollipop. It is now very clean and seems to use little battery…. but I was never a fan of having lots of apps. Being power-stingy trumps bling for me. I only charge to 80% and drain no lower than 20% and still get long life.

I then rooted and cleaned much bloat off…. it was just out of warranty a week ago. ROOTING makes a BIG difference. One thing is that it boots MUCH faster without the unwanted bloats. I think I will get much longer battery life.

After doing some workarounds for lost features in Lollipop, I’m VERY happy with Lollipop. I wish it gave more choices though.

I now have a fresh and fast Note 3.

favorite apps: Retune (absolute most used), ES File Explorer, Kindle, Connect to VPN, Acrobat, Earth, All-In-One Tool Box, banking mobile deposit, action memo, Samsung eMail, and especially WSL. Still looking for a new ad-blocker.

Hey guys and gals, we and i mean most people with Samsung phones cursed after downloading the latest Lollipop 5.0 software. I still don’t kike it and has only avravated me and caused lost calls and delays and very poor battery life and my immediate frustration was with Samsung. However after realizing that they were not the authors of this software, i wondered who would benefit from other android phone companies having disatisfied customers because of crap like whats currently happening ?

My note 3 silence automatically without me knowing it. I lost a lot of calls due to this. Even my alarm is silence at times. After I increase the ringing volume to the max, it becomes silence after a while automatically. How do I fix this?

      07/03/2015 at 9:42 am

Sorry to say bud, I have the same problem and the only thing to do is when you notice it, restart the phone. But to avoid that, when you make or receive a call, when you are done and click to end call, in a blink of an eye, start clicking the back button till you get to the home screen. I fixed this by changing the firmware on mine. But mine is unlocked with no contract.

Is anyone else having problems where the S Pen on the Note 3 being detected is very slow. I pull it out and it takes sometimes 20 sec to detect it. Before the upgrade, I would pull it out and in less then an eye blink, it was detected. Also, I have one other problem. When I would talk to someone via the speaker phone, when I would hang up, I could not hear anything from the speaker anymore. Not even the click of the back button or any stroke of the keys. I could only hear it thru the ear piece on the phone as if I was talking to someone with the phone next to my ear. I have to restart the phone and the problem goes away till the next time.

It’s true that Android 5.0 Lollipop make Galaxy Note3 miserable. But still lollipop has it’s goods and bad! It brings us a new interface+some cool features. But it drains battery too.. If you are using your mobile for business purposes, you need to downgrade to KitKat. Because Kitkat is much better than Lollipop in many ways. but it needs to be improved too.. Every os has it’s own advantages and disadvantages. But mainly criticizing Lollipop isn’t fair though! Developers do everything to make a better OS version for Android uses.

Accelerometer/Gyroscope/Screen Rotation not working. Is it because of lolly pop update in note 3 neo or is it a hardware issue. Can downgrade to kitkat 4.4 resolve the issue
