GBM Shortcut: Back to School Bag Tips

Back to school time means great deals on bags.  In this GBM Shortcut, I take a look at the Lightweight Laptop Bag (LNB-15) from Case Logic.  You may know Case Logic for their CD and DVD cases, but they also make quality bags.  The LNB-15 is available on-line for $54.99.

Here are a few tips when considering you next bag:

Ergonomics:  Make sure the bag fits snugly and comfortably on the back.  A bag that carries weight incorrectly can lead to back problems and chiropractor visits.  A bag that is contoured to a person’s back should feel more comfortable and carry weight better.  The material of the bag should be lightweight so that there is no added weight when carrying a load.  Decide if you prefer a backpack or messenger bag.  A traditional backpack may be your best bet if you will be carrying heavy loads for extended times.

Pockets and organization: If you’re looking for a bag to carry your laptop, make sure that the laptop sleeve is well padded.  There should be a nice layer of padding on the bottom, and the bottom of the sleeve should be a few inches from the bottom of the bag.  This allows extra protection for times that your bag hits the ground abruptly.

Built to last:  I’ve owned many bags that looked cool but couldn’t stand the test of time.  A bag takes a lot of abuse throughout its life.  Sometimes it’s worth it to spend a little extra and buy something that has a solid reputation, positive reviews, and heavy construction.  Look at the bags seams to see if they are double-sewn, and examine the material to see if it is high quality.  The stitching patterns often reveal a bags quality.  The bottom of the bag should have an extra layer of fabric to protect it from wear and possible tears.

Clear or mesh:  Many schools prohibit bags unless they are designed so you can easily see the inner contents.  A mesh or clear, plastic bag will remove your privacy, but still allow you to carry books and homework.  Check your school’s handbook to determine if this kind of bag is required.

Shop around:  Don’t buy the first bag that you find; It’s important that you shop around.  Each store carries different brands, and most brands offer very different designs.  If you settle for the first bag that you think looks good, you might regret not purchasing a better one down the road.  Because most people will use a bag every day, make sure you like the way it looks.  Whether it’s homework, technology, or important proposals, you’ll be spending lots of time with your bag.
