Google Nexus Smartwatch Tipped to Join Nexus 5

Published

on

The new era in mobile and wearable computing is the smartwatch, and it appears that everyone wants to get in on the action. From the Samsung Galaxy Gear, Pebble, the Omate Smartwatch and more. However, one important player in this entire situation is Google, and we’re getting more rumors today about its Nexus device.

Initial reports from the WSJ earlier this year suggested Google had a watch in the works, which was later “confirmed” last month when Google revealed it purchased the smartwatch and wearable platform company WIMM Labs. Fast forward to today and 9to5Google is reporting that the Google Nexus smartwatch could arrive “sooner rather than later” and possibly as soon as October 31st.

We’ve heard and seen a lot about Android 4.4 KitKat, the new Nexus 5, and Google Glass, but Google’s smartwatch has been quite the secret. Codenamed GEM, the Nexus smartwatch is reportedly getting the final finishing touches as we speak and will be announced on October 31st as a companion device to the Nexus 5. This goes against the rumored October 15th release date, but again, the 31st was the original rumor.

There is a chance Google could roll out Android 4.4 tomorrow to the Nexus lineup, but most likely we’ll be seeing one big event where they’ll reveal everything all at once. That being the Nexus 5, possibly the Nexus 10 and smartwatch, then of course Android 4.4 KitKat powering it all.

Back to the Nexus smartwatch, the leakster had some interesting tidbits to say about the upcoming wearable device by Google. Stating it will be heavily focused and centered around Google Now, which makes sense. In fact, we could actually see Android 4.4 KitKat on board with the UI front being heavily favored by Google Now, instead of the traditional home screen we’re all familiar with today.

Everything will be centered around Google Now, Search, and voice commands. Just like Google Glass. Anything from directions to drive home, incoming call and message alerts, notifications and more all will sync to the Nexus smartwatch. Similar to how the Galaxy Gear works, only across any Android device, as Google won’t limit it to a walled garden and single device like Samsung.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a Google Nexus smartwatch, but so far the rumors have been slim, not to mention extremely light on details. We know they have something in the works, and hopefully find out what soon. The tipster ends by saying Google will indeed announce a smartwatch, codenamed GEM, likely together with the reveal of Android 4.4 KitKat. And the date all this is rumored to go down is still October 31st, according to insider sources.

If Google was hosting an event tomorrow or dropping all of this news and hardware, we’d likely know about it by now. At this moment all signs are pointing to a Halloween chocolate filled KitKat announcement later this month. If Google announces a smartwatch this month we might see some Galaxy Gear owners who instantly regret their purchase.
