Gorilla Glass 2: Stronger, Thinner, On the Way Soon (Video)

Last night, we were introduced to the new version of Gorilla Glass, dubbed Gorilla Glass 2, which maker Corning showed off for the first time last night at CES 2012. And while we still don’t know exactly when it will be making its way to mobile devices, we were still able to find out some of the details.

For those unfamiliar with Gorilla Glass, it’s the damage resistant glass that is found on millions of current mobile devices. Corning is hoping that Gorilla Glass 2 builds on the original’s success and from the looks of things, that is in the realm of possibility.

Gorilla Glass 2 is 20% thinner then the original, all while keeping the same toughness and scratch-resistance that those who have used a Gorilla Glass display in the past are accustomed to.

It’ll also enable devices to display brighter images while getting better touch sensitivity.

So, what this means, is that we are going to see Gorilla Glass 2 show up on thinner devices in 2012. And while Corning could not confirm which devices it would end up on, we were told that we might just see one or two show up at the Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona.

The first devices that will see Gorilla Glass 2 will be Windows PC’s that will be out sometime early this year.

Gorilla Glass is amazing so I’m glad they’re bringing out a new, thinner version. So many great things have been announced at this year’s CES, I can’t believe it. My personal favorite is the Hopper from my employer, DISH. I love that you can record up to six shows at once including Prime Time Anytime, which records the four major networks, and its massive amount of storage space for recordings. I keep reading more and learning more about it and am so impressed!
