Griffin Intellicase for iPad Not Quite So Intelligent

iPad 2 users who like Apple’s Smartcover seem to be in constant search for a replacement for Apple’s magnetized screen cover and there are certainly no shortages of case makers out there willing to oblige. Those looking for a full case solution to cover the entire device have a number of options. But I’ve yet to see a solution that offers full coverage of the iPad 2 that seems satisfactory to me. I thought Griffin’s Intellicase might be a real candidate for that, but alas that’s not the case.

The Griffin Intellicase offers a full coverage solution (except for ports, the camera, and the speaker) and it also offers a magnetized cover that puts your iPad to sleep when you close the lid. There’s also a flap on the back that allows you to fold back the lid and put the iPad 2 in what I call a typing position or prop it up for a viewing position. It features a plastic back (Griffin calls it polycarbonate) and the lid is a similar material to the SmartCover’s polyurethane version. All well and good right? Not exactly.

The lid and the back are held together with two straps. While this is suitable for opening the lid and folding it back I find that lid doesn’t want to lay flush to the back of the iPad 2. So, when you’re holding the device in your hands I find that the lid slips around a bit, and occasionally the magnets will put the screen temporarily to sleep, even though the lid is folded over behind the device. Depending on what you’re doing with the iPad 2, that can be a bit frustrating.

So, while the Intellicase is an attempt at providing a full body protection for the iPad 2 that includes some SmartCover like features, I don’t think this was intelligently designed all the way through.

Wow, spent quite a bit of time on that review. How long did you test the case?
