Hitachi To Debut 200-GB 2.5 Inch HD At 7200rpm

HitachihdThis is good news. Hitachi is planning to debut a new 2.5 inch HD with 200GB of storage and running at 7200rpm. Can’t wait. With Core Duo processors and Core 2 Duo processors starting to become the norm, and with the advent of Vista meaning that more memory will be the order of the day, hard drives in mobile devices are fast becoming the potential bottleneck. 4200prm and 5400rpm are just not going to cut it much longer. Of course with that speed comes a potential impact on battery life, and of course, I’m sure the initial prices will be a bit steep. But this is a move that has been long in coming and will be eagerly awaited (at least until those SSD drives come way down in price.) Look for this in the first half of 2007. They are also readying a 250GB 2.5 inch HD but only at 5400rpm. Here’s a link to the press release.
