Before you do any of these, make sure that you unplug the power cable from your MacBook and from power.

This guide will not be able to fix a broken MacBook charger that is essentially fried from connecting it to a MacBook that pulls too much power, but if the cable is broken or starting to break you can use these tips and guides.

Fix Broken MacBook Charger

[easyazon_infoblock align=”right” identifier=”B002CC05EA” locale=”US” tag=”gbm-ea-20″]If your MacBook charger is just starting to fray where the cord connects to the power brick, and it still charges your MacBook, you can use this fix to save your charger for about $12.

Gardner Bender sells Liquid Tape that can seal up and save your Macbook charger from any other damage. This is a white electric tape in liquid form, so it is safe to use on a charger and it will look better than wrapping black electrical tape around your charger.

Simply paint over the worn area with the Liquid Tape and let it dry for about an hour. This will insulate the electrical part and help prevent further damage and fraying. You can also use this to fix iPhone and iPad charging cables that experience similar damage.

There is a small brush inside the can that you can use to apply it, but you may also want to buy a small foam or regular paint brush to apply. Plan on an hour to dry and make sure you apply in a well ventilated area.

Fix MacBook Charger With Broken Cable

If you didn’t catch the problem soon enough you may find that your MacBook Charger does not work due to a frayed cable that is barely hanging on. You can fix this on your own, but it requires a little more time and patience. Thanks to a handy guide form iFixit, you don’t need to be an electrical genius, you just need to follow directions.

You will need a flat head screwdriver, wire strippers, crazy glue, a hot glue gun, soldering iron and zip ties. You can buy these from iFixit or at a local hardware store. This is a good deal if you already own or will re-use some of these tools, as buying all of them just for this project can quickly add up.

The video above walks through the process that is very similar to the MacBook charger repair guide on iFixit.

If you cannot fix the Macbook Charger with the guides above, you may want to buy a used one on eBay or from a local repair shop. This is an easy way to save $30 to $40.

Keep in mind that if your broken MacBook Charger is less than a year old it should still be under warranty and you can go to an Apple Store to get a replacement. If you purchased AppleCare+ it does cover your charger for three years, so it is better to get a replacement than to fix it yourself.

If you are having problems with the joint fraying (the brick to skinny cable) check out the Brick Boot! it works extremely well and is less pricey than alternatives or buying a new cable!
