Apple released the second minor update to iOS 8.1 yesterday, coming with the usual bug fixes, but the bigger news is that the TaiG jailbreak still works with the latest iOS version. Here’s how to jailbreak iOS 8.1.2 with TaiG.
While iOS 8.1.2 is a rather minor update, it fixes a big problem which affected users who purchased ringtones from iTunes, but wouldn’t be able to get them back if they switched devices. This new update allows users to get those ringtones back.
After updating to iOS 8.1.2, iPhone users will discover that any ringtones they purchased from iTunes can be restored to their device. Many users have complained about that issue for months, but it seems that Apple listened closely, although the update could’ve easily come sooner.
The TaiG jailbreak currently only works on Windows machines for the installation process and there’s no word on whether or not a Mac version will be on the way, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it soon enough.
Just like with Pangu, TaiG is a Chinese-based jailbreak, so the website and the installation instructions are mostly in Chinese, but TaiG recently introduced an English version of the website and its jailbreak tool, which makes the process a bit easier to follow, and this how-to guide will show you through the process of jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad running iOS 8.1.2.
However, if you’ve been brave enough to install the Pangu jailbreak in the past when it was mostly in Chinese, then you should be able to handle the TaiG jailbreak as well, as the install process is pretty straightforward, but there are a few new things to be aware of. Let’s get started.
Before you actually jailbreak your iPhone or iPad, you’ll want to make sure that you completely back up all data on your device, which you can do through iTunes, and we even have a handy guide on how to do that.
It’s also best to install a clean version of iOS on your device before jailbreaking it, as you’re much less likely to run into any problems.
Plus, if you’re not already on iOS 8, you’ll be killing two birds with one stone for this one. You can simply update to iOS 8 and install a clean version of iOS by clicking on Restore in iTunes. You’ll need to turn off Find My iPhone in Settings on your iPhone or iPad, but after that, just follow the instructions and you’ll be with a clean version of iOS 8 in no time.
However, depending on your internet connection speed, downloading iOS 8 could take as long as an hour or two, especially if you’ve stayed on iOS 7 for a few months, so you might have to be patient while Apple downloads the update.
After the update finishes downloading, it’ll begin the install process for putting a clean version of iOS 8 on your iPhone or iPad. This could take an extra few minutes, so you’ll have to be patient yet again.
How to Jailbreak iOS 8.1.2
Before you do anything else, it’s crucial that you first disable the passcode on your device by going intoSettings > Touch ID & Passcode and turn off the passcode. You’ll also need to turn on Airplane Mode by swiping up from the bottom of your screen to open Control Center and tap the airplane icon. Lastly, you’ll need to temporarily disable Find My iPhone by going to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone.
Now comes the fun part. Head to www.taig.com and download the jailbreaking tool by clicking on where it says Download TaiG Jailbreak Tool. It should already be highlighted in blue when you visit the web page.
Next, install iTunes if you don’t have it installed already and plug in your iPhone or iPad into your Windows computer. Make sure that your computer and iTunes recognize the device.
Right click on the .EXE file that you downloaded and select Run as Administrator. The TaiG jailbreak tool will launch and from there you’ll want to make sure that you uncheck the second box, but keep Cydia checked, and then click the green jailbreak button.
Let the jailbreak install process do its thing and a smiley face will appear letting you know that the process is complete. Your iOS device will reboot, but after that you can access your iPhone and launch Cydia to prepare its file system. All done!
If you backed up your iPhone or iPad before jailbreaking and installed a clean version of iOS 8, now is the time to restore your backup. You’ll get all of your apps back, as well as all of your settings. To do this, just go into iTunes with your iOS device plugged in and click Restore Backup.
