If you’ve got a new Microsoft Surface Tablet for your family you might want to think about setting up parental controls for those times when you can’t monitor your child using the Surface. It’s a great way to give you some peace of mind regarding the content your child might be viewing or the time you child might be spending on the Surface. It’s also a way to keep your credit card bill down, because you can restrict purchases in the Windows Store.
Here are the things you can do with Parental Controls.
- Filter Web sites
- Set Time limits
- Set Restrictions in the Windows Store and with Games by ratings or title.
- Control which Apps can be installed on your Surface.
The first thing you want to do is set up a separate account for your kid or kids to use. Here’s how:
- Swipe from the right to open the Charms menu
- Select the Settings Charm
- Select Change PC Settings
- When the Settings screen appears, select Users
- Select Other accounts
- Select Add an account
The choose Other accounts.
When the next screen appears choose Add a child’s account.
If you want your child to have an email address or he/she already does enter it here. You can also choose to Add a child’s account without email.
On the next screen assign the account a user name and a password.
Once the account is created go back to the Accounts screen under Change PC settings. Select Manage Family Safety settings online. This will bring you to a web page where you can manage the parental settings for this account. Here you have a multitude of options to consider. We strongly suggest you review the options and make your choices regarding your family’s preferences. Yes, you have some homework to do.
You can turn on Activity Reporting, choose to filter web browsing by restrictions or set up an allow or block list. You can set up time limits on weekdays and weekends and even set a curfew.
You can choose which Apps to restrict and choose to restrict game play by ratings or which games that are installed on your PC that can be played or not.
You can even set up a Request feature so that if someone using the PC wants to access something that is restricted you will see a request so that you can take action.
That’s a lot. But to allow your family to enjoy your Surface Tablet without you constantly monitoring what they are doing, it takes a little effort. And that effort should give you peace of mind and let your family enjoy their Surface PC.
