This is how to stop WhatsApp friends from knowing you’ve read their messages when you open the app. While it can be handy to let people know when you’ve read a WhatsApp message, there are many times when you simply don’t want to reply right away or make someone feel like you’ve ignored them.
Whether you want to turn off WhatsApp read receipts for privacy or for convenience it is a simple change. Unfortunately you cannot make the change on a contact by contact basis. This is something you can do in iMessage and it is very handy.
How to Turn Off WhatsApp Read Receipts
You can turn off read receipts in WhatsApp on iPhone or Android the same way. It takes less than 30 seconds and you can reverse the setting at any time.
- Open WhatsApp on your iPhone or Android.
- Tap on Settings in the lower right.
- Tap on Account.
- Tap on Privacy.
- Toggle Read Receipts Off.
That’s all there is to the change. The effect is immediate. If you decide that you want people to know that you read their WhatsApp messages you can toggle this back on.
For an added level of privacy you can turn off the ability to show when you were online last. In the Privacy menu, tap on Last Seen and turn it to Nobody if you don’t want anyone to know the last time you looked at the app.
With these WhatsApp options enabled the messaging service gains a small layer of privacy and security on top of the already encrypted messaging. With end to end encryption only the people involved in your conversation can see them. Not even WhatsApp can see what you send.
WhatsApp is a messaging app that works across multiple phone types and operating systems so that you can message call and video call without relying on text messaging. You can also send WhatsApp messages from your computer using the web or with an app for Windows or Mac.
