With HP having already teased that it will launch a webOS-based tablet in the near future, we now have more information about its Topaz codenamed tablet, of which the company has filed for the Touchpad trademark. Along with the hardware specs for the tablet and its ability to sync wirelessly with the cloud, PreCentral has also discovered information of a new Touchstone 2 system for docking and inductive charging, which forgoes wires and adds some functionality when docked with the optional accessory.
Rather than going with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core gigahertz processor, HP is going with rival Qualcomm with its 1.2 GHz ARM-based dual-core Snapdragon chip with Adreno 220 GPU for 2D and 3D graphics with Open GLES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 support. The blog notes that both HP and Palm branding will be on-board and HP will also try to get its Beats branding as well, in both software and hardware support for enhanced audio. For now, though, its unclear which carriers will subsidize and offer the Topaz, but 3G and 4G options will be available.
The device features a 9.7-inch XGA display, 512 MB RAM, and storage configurations of 16/32/64 GB. There will be a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat, and HP is looking to partnering with Skype or Google Talk for cross-platform video chat capabilities. The device is expected to have a battery life of about eight hours. GPS is included in the versions with 3G or 4G, but not on the WiFi-only version.
When docked to the wireless charging Touchstone unit, HP is planning on adding some functionality beyond just charging. Through its tap to share mechanism, HP will enable:
- Wireless picture sharing
Wireless website sharing
Wireless audio streaming via Bluetooth to speaker dock
Wireless map and directions
Wireless music sharing from Palm smartphone (eg Broadway) to Topaz
Wireless contact sharing
Wireless video streaming from Touchstone video dock to VGA or HDMI out
Wireless video game playing via Touchstone video dock
HP may also offer cloud-synchronization and integration with the following Web-based services:
- Snapfish for photos
Melodeo music integration
HP Cloud Drive
HP Cloud Canvas
