The HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat update release has begun as Google has begun pushing out the HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade today, just a few days after the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Moto X received their upgrades to Google’s latest software. It also makes it the first HTC One variant to get the new software.
Several days ago, HTC said that it had delivered the HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4 KitKat update code to Google, one of the final steps before the software’s roll out. The delivery came on the final day of HTC’s promised 15 day release window and it came shortly before the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 Android 4.4 KitKat OTA roll outs started.
HTC said that the update was in Google’s hands and that the roll out could begin at any time. Today, the HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4 KitKat update release has begun, marking the first time that an HTC device has received Android 4.4 KitKat and kicking off an HTC One Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade process that will extend to the Developer Edition and the regular old HTC One in the weeks ahead.
The update is pushing out Over-the-Air which means that it will likely be arriving relatively slowly for those who don’t install the update early. Yes, there is a manual installation method available for those with the know-how as the software has been discovered lurking on Google’s servers. Those who know how to sideload software can get the software ahead of the OTA. Those that don’t know how will simply want to wait for the OTA to arrive.
The HTC One Google Play Edition is the first HTC One to get Android 4.4 KitKat but it’s not going to be the last. HTC has said that the HTC One Developer Edition will be getting the software within the month of November while rumors suggest that the regular old HTC One could see the update arrive before Christmas. HTC says that it’s committed to an Android 4.4 KitKat roll out in the United States by the end of January though the company hasn’t said exactly when it will be rolling the software out.
The company has also confirmed updates for the HTC One Max, HTC One mini and the Droid DNA, though none of those have specific timing. The Droid DNA update is apparently going to be coming sometime in Q1 which means that it should roll out by the end of March.
