The HTC One M7 Sense 6 update has finally arrived in North America though the update is not available in the United States just yet. Instead, the HTC One Sense 6 update is available in Canada with several more updates expected to arrive for HTC One owners sometime in the weeks ahead.
Unlike most manufacturers, HTC keeps its customers involved with the software upgrade process. The company hosts dedicated websites that take device owners through the Android update process from development, to integration to the certification that is necessary before an update can roll out.
So, for several weeks now, we’ve known that the HTC One M7 Sense 6 update is on the way to owners of last year’s model. Sense 6 first arrived on board the HTC One M8, the company’s current flagship, and the software is expected to reach owners of several HTC devices including the HTC One M7 in the future.
HTC’s website has HTC One M7 Sense 6 updates listed in various stages of development. Until today, it was unclear which carrier would get the update first but it now appears that carriers in Canada will be taking the crown as the update has been confirmed for carrier Canadian carrier TELUS.
It appears that TELUS may not be the only carrier getting the update today. Mobile Syrup claims that the update should be available across Canadian carriers. That means users on Bell, Rogers, SaskTell, Virgin Mobile, and Wind should either see the update today or very soon. Users are advised to check in their settings to see if the update is available. If it’s not available, users should expect to receive an update at some point down the road.
The update will bring not only Sense 6 software features but also bug fixes and enhancements to owners of one of 2013’s best smartphones. The partial change log for TELUS, which can be see in the photo below, describes a number of the changes that HTC One M7 owners in Canada, and around the world, can expect from Sense 6.
Those who are unfamiliar with Sense 6 and its feature set can get a sense of what to expect from the in depth hands-on video below. Sense 6 brings some substantial changes from the previous version of Sense, Sense 5.5, and HTC One owners are advised to acclimate themselves before downloading the new software.
While the HTC One M7 Sense 6 update is available in Canada, the update remains out of reach in the United States. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have yet to roll out the software upgrade for their users though a trio of updates should be close.
The AT&T, Sprint and Verizon HTC One Sense 6 updates are currently in the certification process. Carrier certifications are unpredictable but this is the final stage that updates must pass through before they are released. We still don’t have any firm release dates but HTC One owners should expect these upgrades to fire off soon.
T-Mobile’s HTC One M7 Sense 6 update is still in the development stage and is lagging behind the rest of the pack. It’s not clear how this might affect the timing of its release though we could potentially see it roll out last amongst the United States larger carriers.
More HTC One M7 Sense 6 updates are expected to push out in the near future. LlabTooFeR, a noted HTC leakster and ROM developer, claims that the update should land in the United Kingdom by the end of May. No specific date is known but his information about HTC software updates is typically accurate.
Up next for the HTC One M7 and HTC One M8 is expected to be Android 4.4.3 KitKat, an update that is under development at the moment and aims to deliver key bug fixes to Android 4.4.2 KitKat users. LlabTooFeR claims that the software will be pushing out to HTC One M7 and HTC One M8 owners starting in May or June though no specific date is currently known.
Google has confirmed Android 4.4.3 KitKat for arrival a couple of times though the update remains unannounced. It’s expected to debut sometime during the month of May and it should arrive for a number of devices, not just HTC’s M7 and M8.
Android 4.4.3 KitKat update rumors point to a widespread release. The update is expected to land for Google’s stable of Nexus smartphones and tablets and also land for the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3, the Moto X, and Google’s Google Play Edition devices which includes the HTC One M8.
Release dates for those other devices remain missing in action though Google’s Nexus-branded smartphones and tablets tend to get Google’s updates first.
It’s not clear yet what Android 4.4.3 KitKat will offer to HTC One owners though we imagine that it will be chock full of bug fixes that aim to shore up the overall experience.
