Lately more and more rumors have been emerging about new Nexus smartphones for 2015, especially now that the successor to Android 5.0 Lollipop currently being called Android M, is set to be released in August or September. Below are a few things we think we know about the 2015 Nexus 6, made by Huawei.

In October of last year Google announced and then released three Nexus devices. The Nexus 6 smartphone. A brand new size and 4:3 aspect ratio bigger Nexus 9 tablet, and the Nexus Player. Both mobile devices ran the latest version of Android, which is Android 5.0 Lollipop, and have since received updates to Android 5.1 Lollipop. What about devices for 2015? Read on for the latest.

Recent reports are suggesting that two Nexus phones are coming in 2015, and today we have more details to share about the bigger variant, a Nexus 6 for 2015 made by Huawei, a popular Chinese manufacturer. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this, but today’s news comes from a reliable source. With that, here’s what you need to know based on what we know so far.

Huawei P8 Lite

Originally there were two different rumors regarding the 2015 Nexus smartphone. Some claimed Huawei would make it while others were suggesting the next Nexus would be made by LG, who made the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 in 2012 and 2013. However, it looks like both were accurate, and Google is planning to release two smartphones later this fall running the all-new Android M release.

A Nexus 5 made by LG is reportedly coming later this fall with a 5.2-inch Quad-HD display, the same 6-core processor as the new LG G4 with 3GB of RAM, a 16 megapixel OIS camera, and will be a pretty impressive smartphone bigger than the Nexus 5, but smaller than last years Nexus 6. If that is too small for some, here’s what we know about the Nexus 6 for 2015.

Huawei Nexus 6 (2015)

Today a report from The Information, a highly reliable source, suggests that a second Nexus smartphone will be announced and released in 2015 and be made by Huawei. Their sources suggest that this partnership is an effort to finally get Google’s services in China, one of the biggest markets in the world. Until now all Google services, Google search, the Play Store and more are banned by the government.

This new report suggests that either the Google Play Store, or some sort of Google app store will launch in China with the help of the Chinese manufacturer Huawei. This will be bundled with a new 5.7-inch Nexus 6 made by Huawei to replace Motorola’s Nexus 6 from 2014. In return, Google will help Huawei break into the US market, boost the company’s efforts in the smartphone segment as a whole, and help Huawei build a new smartwatch running Android Wear.

A Nexus phone from Huawei will not only help Google in China, but help Huawei in the United States. A win win for both companies, while delivering a more wallet-friendly Nexus 6 this year vs the expensive $649 Nexus 6 made by Motorola.

Huawei Nexus 6 Specs

If recent rumors are accurate about Google’s plans for the Nexus line in 2015, the 5.2-inch LG Nexus 5 will be a great device, but the Huawei Nexus 6 will be even better. Huawei’s Nexus smartphone is reportedly codenamed “Angler”, and the LG Nexus is codenamed “Bullhead”. Google uses fish-related terms for device codenames. The Nexus 6 last year is called Shamu internally at Google.

So what can we expect from the 2015 Nexus 6 made by Huawei? We’re not sure, but here’s the latest details based on loose rumors.

Nexus 6 2015 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5.7-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD Display
  • 8-core Snapdragon 810 processor with 3 or 4GB of RAM
  • 32 & 64GB storage configurations
  • Android M (5.2 or Android 6.0)
  • 13-16 Megapixel rear and unknown front camera setup
  • 3,500 mAh battery
  • more

With Android M Google added native fingerprint support for enhanced security, fingerprint logins, and to use with Android Pay or Google Wallet. Most likely the new Nexus 6 will have a fingerprint scanner, as well as a USB Type-C connector for charging and faster data transfer.

Most Nexus devices also feature wireless charging, which could also arrive with this new Nexus 6. All of that combined would make this the best Nexus smartphone released to date.

Nexus 6 2015 Price

Huawei is known for building premium Android smartphones and tablets but at wallet-friendly prices. If a 2015 Nexus 6 is made by Huawei, more than likely it will come in much cheaper than the Nexus 6 made by Motorola. Huawei typically releases flagship Android devices under $500, and we could see something along the lines of a $449 32GB Nexus 6, and maybe a $499 Nexus 6 with 64GB of storage.

This is all purely speculation, but given the recent rumors along with previous smartphone releases from the company, its plausible that this is what will be coming later this year.

Release Date

The Nexus 5 in 2013, and the newer Nexus 6 released last year were both announced in the 4th quarter of the year, and released in late October or November. Originally rumors were suggesting a similar release date for both new Nexus smartphones in 2016, but all signs are pointing to an earlier release this year.

This report today from The Information suggests the smartphone will be released “this fall” but that’s about all we have to go on. That said, yesterday Google confirmed Android M will be released near the end of Q3 2015. Which is July, August and September. If this is accurate, Google’s latest version of Android will be released to the public sometime in September, and be accompanied by at least one new Nexus device.

Nexus5

Each new Android release for the past two years has debuted on an all-new Nexus smartphone or tablet. If recent years are any indication, we’ll be seeing a brand new Nexus 5 and/or Nexus 6 along with Android M announced and released before the end of September, which is technically the start of the “fall” months. This will be well ahead of the new iPhone, and possible beat Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5 to market. These new Nexus smartphones could also be released along side a new Android Wear smartwatch or two running on Android M, potentially a Huawei Nexus Watch.

As the summer comes to a close expect further details, leaks, information and more to surface. We’ll keep an eye out for additional details and report as things progress.
