iOS 6.1.3 is now available for the iPhone 5, iPad mini, iPad 4 and other iOS 6 devices with an important security fix that prevents malicious users from bypassing the iPhone lock screen.
The iOS 6.1.3 update is now available as a small over the air download on devices running iOS 6. The update clocks in at 17-18MB on the iPhone 5 and iPad mini and should take about 10 minutes to download and install.
Apple finally patched the long-standing lock screen bug which allowed someone to bypass the iPhone lock screen and gain access to contacts and photos. While not as big as the Samsung Galaxy S3 lock screen bypass it is an unwanted security hole.
The new iOS 6.1.3 update fixes this security hole on the iPhone and brings along fixes to Maps in Japan. Security researchers are likely already looking to confirm that Apple patched this security issue.
To upgrade to iOS 6.1.3, follow these instructions.
- Back up the iPhone or iPad to iTunes or iCloud.
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Software update
- Tap on Download and install
- Follow any prompts and install the update.
Users will need at least 50% battery life or to be connected to a power source. Alternately users can plug the iPhone or iPad into a computer and update through iTunes.
Aside from these stated fixes, it’s not clear if there are any other minor improvements which Apple did not include in the release notes.
According to Gotta Be Mobile readers, iOS 6.1.2 did not fix all of the iOS 6 problems and issues. We’ve heard from users who are still experiencing iPhone exchange issues on iOS 6 that result in bad battery life. We’ve also heard from one user who lost access to his photos after upgrading to iOS 6.1.2.
WiFi Problems on the iPad 3 continue to frustrate Gotta Be Mobile staff, who regularly need to reset all settings in order to use the iPad 3 on WiFi.
Users with an iOS 6.1 jailbreak with the Evasi0n tool should avoid iOS 6.1.3 until further notice as it may break part of the jailbreak.
It’s possible that the next iOS update will deliver iOS 7, unless Apple plans to push out more bug fixes.
