As Wait for iOS 6 Jailbreak Continues, Pod2g Demands Open iOS 7

The iOS 6 jailbreak is still a work in progress and as the wait continues, one of the individuals who might hold the keys to a successful untethered iPhone 5 jailbreak is calling for an Open iOS when Apple releases iOS 7.

Cyril, known as @pod2g on Twitter is a well-known iOS hacker responsible for important parts of the iPhone 4S jailbreak last year.

Pod2g recently gave a lengthy interview saying he believes we will see an iOS 6 jailbreak and that he might get back in the game, but today on Twitter he is calling for an Open iOS.

He has faith that iOS 7, the likely name for Apple’s next iPhone and iPad software which could arrive later this year. Apple may show off the new version of iOS at WWDC 2013 during the summer and if it follows the iOS 5 and iOS 6 release it could arrive in the fall of 2013.

Cyril goes on to ask Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, what his thoughts on an open iOS are. Wozniak has yet to respond.

The movement has a petition for an Open iOS, with 903 signatures at the time of this writing.

The #weWantAnOpenIOS hashtag is trending.

The call for an Open iOS 7 is catching on. The #weWantAnOpenIOS hashtag is trending in several locations across the world as Twitter users retweet, add demands and discuss the idea.

Why Users Want an Open iOS

Right now the only way to install applications not authorized by Apple, customize the look of the iPhone and change default options on the iPhone or iPad is with a jailbreak. There is no iOS 6 jailbreak, which means there is no iPhone 5 jailbreak. Because of this some users are still using an iPhone 4S on iOS 5, as they value the tweaks over the new Apple features.

Auxo, a new app switcher is just one of the reasons iPhone 5 owners are waiting for an iOS 6 jailbreak and demanding an open iOS.

Users are hoping Apple will allow them to perform many of these tasks without a jailbreak when iOS 7 is released. Apple is known for fighting jailbreak attempts and a love for control over the iOS ecosystem, so the company is not likely to open up the OS based on an online signature.

Switch to Android from iPhone Jailbreak

Without an iOS 6 jailbreak, some users are looking at Android.

Pressure from iPhone users switching to Android from the iPhone is another matter. We’ve heard from readers in email and on Twitter that they may switch to Android if there is no jailbreak.

iOS 6 Jailbreak Status

We’ve seen progress on the iOS 6 jailbreak, including the photo below of an iPhone 5 jailbreak in the works, shown on a device running IntelliscreenX, a jailbreak only app. This is an app like the one that users would love to see on an open iOS.

@Planetbeing is working on an iOS 6 jailbreak and with pod2g possibly getting back in the game, we could see an iOS 6 jailbreak release in the first half of 2013, if Cyril’s confidence in “the next 6 months” is right.

Stay tuned for the latest iOS 6 jailbreak news.

Why do you think they will give this treat? It means loss of billions of dollars to them

I switched to Android after having a jailbroken 3GS for almost 3 years. New iPhones always came out, but I never wanted to upgrade because I didn’t want to lose my jailbreak. I love my Galaxy S3. Since someone on my plan wasn’t interested in upgrading their phone, I took that upgrade and got an iPhone 4S for $50 with the intention of jailbreaking it and having it only for games. Unfortunately, it shipped with iOS 6.0.1 and is not yet jailbreakable. The phone is still in the box and will remain in it until a jailbreak is released. If none is released, I can always sell it and make a profit on my $50 investment. Either way, I hope Apple understands the situation they are in. They risk losing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of potential repeat customers for their stubbornness. I doubt they care. If iOS6 isn’t cracked, consider jailbreaking officially dead as we know it.

Why not just roll back the OS? There are plenty of tutorials on how to do this on YouTube, etc. If you’re savvy enough to jailbreak this should have been your first instinct upon discovering iOS 6 was pre installed.

It is come upon us as the be all and end all. The openness on the iPhone would be a great thing for Apple. Even if they endorse the tweaks and themes that are out there for us. Lets face it. What was once a great thing is slowly becoming old at age. I went all out and got the iphone 5 just because of everything the jailbrea king community had to offer. Lets face it. It made the iPhone and iPod one of the most popular must have items but like the crazy frog once was. It can come and go just like that. Just rewrite the iphone laws. Allow use to make it a way we want it. That way you will still be Market leaders but with that twist we all want. Be wise. Listen to the fans. It lose use forever to the android market.

It’s true. Apple has come through this far, it is all because of the earlier jailbreak community. Not because of the godamn locked anti-freedom phone. Back in the early days, even Blue-tooth was restricted and strictly just for headphones. If it is not because of the help of jailbreaks, iOS is doomed ever since 3GS. That’s it.

@wewantanopenios maybe you should check your statistics before commenting. iOS almost doubling sales YOY. Open? Nothing is open and free as you think. It all comes with a hefty price tag.

Dude, the reason the statistics as it stand now is because of the ‘help’ of the earlier jailbreaks. Now folks seeing the customization is huge in jailbreaks, so they jump on the iPhone bandwagon. “IF” there was no jailbreak from the beginning, you’d think Apple will doubled the sales as of now?
