iOS 7.1.1 Update: 5 Problems & Fixes
The iOS 7.1.1 update is a small release that fixes a few important iOS 7.1 problems and bugs on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. For the most part the iOS 7.1.1 update delivers good performance on the iPhone and iPad, but some users are complaining about a slowly growing number of iOS 7.1.1 problems.
We’ve already shared iOS 7.1.1 reviews on the top Apple devices, and while our experience is mostly positive we are taking a closer look at problems users are experiencing and possible fixes.
Apple tests these small updates internally before releasing them to fix lingering issues with iOS 7 and iOS 7.1, but without a widespread test on millions of devices there is always a chance that something will go wrong out in the real world. For users that end up on a device with an iOS 7.1.1 update problem it could be a long wait for a fix.
We expect to see iOS 8 announced on June 2nd, but it will not likely arrive for users until this fall. While Apple will not necessarily stop iOS 7 updates as soon as they announce iOS 8, the focus certainly shifts. Once May 2013 arrived Apple shifted to issuing device specific updates to iOS 6, and we could see a similar push to incorporate any new features and bug fixes into an iOS 8 release.
Here is a look at the most common iOS 7.1.1 update problems that users are complaining about on Apple Support forums and on Twitter and possible fixes when they are available.
iOS 7.1.1 Problems & Fixes
As we mention in our iOS 7.1.1 review on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5, small bug fix updates can solve a lot of issues, but they can also bring new problems.
iOS 7.1.1 Battery Life Problems
After every major iOS update users complain of bad iPhone battery life. There are many users complaining of bad iOS 7.1.1 battery life on Twitter and on Apple Support forums. For many users the iPhone battery life is dropping to less than six hours, which is a big issue.
Someone who said iOS 7.1.1 improves battery life lied.

Ok Apple, 5 hours of battery life on the iPhone 5s with iOS 7.1.1 is just terrible.. Hate this everlasting drama.. pic.twitter.com/hTEIOhiupT

If iOS 7.1.1 battery life problems are keeping your iPhone from lasting a full day there are a few steps you can try. If your iPhone battery life is only a little bit worse you should read up on these iOS 7.1 battery life tips that can help fix small problems.
For more serious cases you’ll need to reset all network settings, reset all settings or reset your phone and start from scratch. You can follow the steps outlined in this post to fix IOS 7.1.1 battery life. If all else fails you can usually ask an Apple Store Genius to test the iPhone battery for free.
iOS 7.1.1 WiFi Problems
WiFi problems are common after an iOS update, and while there are scattered reports of WiFi not working after the iOS 7.1.1 update there is a simple fix for most users.
Most of the users that report this problem were able to fix it by restarting their router. If you are at home you can unplug the router or about 60 second and plug it back in to restart it. After that it should start working. If this simple fix does not work make sure you can connect to other WiFi networks and try restarting the iPhone before taking more drastic steps like buying a new router.
iOS 7.1.1 Update Problems
A major iOS 7.1.1 update problem hit iPad owners, mostly iPad 3 and older iPad owners which caused some users to lose data unless they had a backup. Multiple reports on Twitter and in the Apple Support forums discuss this problem.
Installing iOS 7.1.1 on iPad 3 failed miserably. Now, complete recovery and restore. Bummer!

Posting to contribute to the public record: Apple iOS 7.1.1 update bricked my iPad 3.
— Mark R Lindsey (@markrlindsey) April 27, 2014
Sadly, the only real fix to this iOS 7.1.1 update problem is to plug your iPad in and back it up before the update in case you run into a problem that requires you to restore the iPad. It does not appear that the iOS 7.1.1 update broke any iPads permanently. If you tried to update to iOS 7.1.1 and it did not work you will need to plug into a computer and use iTunes to restore the iPad as a new device and then restore from a backup.
iTunes Will Not Recognize the iPhone
Some users are able to upgrade to iOS 7.1.1 easily, but after the update is complete they cannot connect to iTunes to backup or sync. The main report of this iOS 7.1.1 update problem is in the Apple Support forums.
If you experience this you should put the iPhone into DFU mode by following these instructions, starting at step 3, or watching the video above.
iOS 7.1.1 Crashes
Another big problem that is back with the iOS 7.1.1 update is the return of the freezing and crashes that plagued iPhone owners for months after the iOS 7 release. Apple fixed this for the most part with iOS 7.1 but after this update one of our review devices experienced a crash while using FaceTime Audio and others report this happening on Twitter.
anyone else having crazy problems with iOS 7.1.1? my 5S has frozen and needed hard reset 5x in last 6 hours. 2 of those were on lock screen
— Matt Lehrer (@mattlehrer) April 28, 2014
Just made iOS 7.1.1 crash and reboot twice in the past 30 minutes. “Just works”, they said.
— Felipe Knorr Kuhn (@knorrium) April 30, 2014
Unfortunately there isn’t a quick fix for this problem. Users can try to regularly restart the iPhone or to do a full restore, but there is no promise that it will stop the iPhone from crashing on iOS 7.1.1.

I am having trouble with my iPad Mini since update of 7.1.1! I can’t even do any more updates as it just sits there & keeps spinning. I can’t open thing on my e-mails such as Facebook, Youtube or anything sent to me. It is getting very aggravating!!! I can’t get more done on my Droid phone than I can on my iPad Mini! I love my iPad Mini and have only had it a year & a half. Is there any fixes for this problem??? I save a lot of crochet patterns on it and can’t access most of them. PLEASE HELP!!!

As of two days ago, I can no longer send or reply to emails on either my iPhone 4s or my iPad. I have deleted and re-created my email account several times. Can still receive emails. Both have iOS 7.1.1. Does anyone know of a fix? Suddenlink tells me it must be the email program. Thanks!

A lot of trolls here.. Nicknames like apple has gone now, apple to go and garbages like that can’t be trusted ..
The battery life on 7.1.1 is like usual, if you use all features 3G, wifi, location service, bluetooth, brightness to the max you will get 4-5 hours of usage.
If you close what you don’t need with an eye to battery saving you can reach 6-7-8 hours of normal usage… Android toy phones like Samsung are way more worst than this.

Same problem upgrading to 7.1.1 Have no usable wifi on S4. Can connect to Samsung Hot Spot when 2 phones next to one another. All other networks, receive msg “unable to join network”. If freeze phone, see many more networks but can not join. Called Apple support. When I provided version 7.1.1.(11D201) he said my upgrade was corrupt and I need to pay $149 as phone out of warranty. Phone worked perfectly before upgrade. When I asked if I would get my money back if Apple fix did not work, NO was the response. As I did not cause the problem I declined to pay to fix an apple error. I then asked if there was any way Apple would accept responsibility for the problem and fix the phone. He went off to speak with supervisor to check. I waited 30 mins. Clearly Apple’s response is ***** you unless u pay. I was about to upgrade my wife’s Samsung to Apple but you can guess what I will be doing. DO NOT UPGRADE ANY IOS DEVICE TO 7.1.1 Apple – own up to causing a problem and fix it Steve would have done so. Jim
