iOS jailbreak developer iH8sn0w is claiming to have successfully jailbroken iOS 7.1 on an iPhone 4s.
This can only mean that progress has been made behind the scenes on an iOS 7.1 jailbreak, considering that only A4 devices were able to be jailbroken, according to reports earlier this month when video proof showed an iPhone 4 being jailbroken while running iOS 7.1.
The iPhone 4s uses Apple’s A5 processor, and if jailbreakers have successfully jailbroken iOS 7.1 with the A5 chip, that means the iPad 2, first-gen iPad mini and the 6th-gen iPod touch should be able to become jailbroken on iOS 7.1 as well.
This is both good and bad news. The good news is that it seems jailbreak developers have found an exploit in iOS 7.1 that allows for a successful jailbreak. However, the bad news is that we likely won’t see an iOS 7.1 jailbreak hit the public, as developers will sit on the exploit and save it for iOS 8.
This is still good news, though, as there’s hope for newer iOS 7.1 devices to be jailbroken eventually, but the newer chips that these newer devices have are a lot harder to crack than the older A4 and A5 chips. Frankly, we’re not surprised that jailbreakers have already exploited the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s on iOS 7.1.
Regardless, the jailbreak community is skeptical that developers will release an iOS 7.1 jailbreak to the public, citing that jailbreak devs will most likely keep any exploits to themselves until iOS 8 comes out. This echos what another jailbreak developer said a couple weeks ago, saying that jailbreaking iOS 7.1 isn’t a huge priority right now.
Of course, if you’re still on iOS 7.0.6 or older, you can jailbreak your iOS device with ease, just be sure to stay away from iOS 7.1 like the plague, as it will delete your jailbreak.
