Apple’s entirely revamped iOS 7 operating system, heralded for being clean and offering many useful features, is also the cause of motion sickness, vertigo, and dizziness. While the clean looks of the iPhone’s and iPad’s mobile operating system, designed by famed Apple hardware designer Jony Ive, is far from an eye sore, iOS 7 is in fact causing eye pain for some users.
“The zoom animations everywhere on the new iOS 7 are literally making me nauseous and giving me a headache.” one user reported. “It’s exactly how I used to get car sick if I tried to read in the car.”
“After using it for two minutes, I felt nauseous,” another user added.
There are two things on iOS 7 that may cause users to feel motion sickness. The first feature is called parallax, and gives iOS 7 a 3D-like appearance like seeing the grid of app icons on a 3D display. The second thing is the way animations are handled when apps are opened, closed, and multitasked.
Fortunately, as to the parallax effects, those could be adjusted by the user. Users could go into their settings menu and “reduce motion” to reduce the effects. This would create a more 2D appearance of the app screen.
To do this, go to settings, tap general, open the accessibility menu, and then click on reduce motion.
Unfortunately, though, there is no way to reduce the animation motions when apps are opened and closed.
As of the time of this writing, there are 8 pages of comments on one particular thread about motion sickness induced by iOS 7. Unfortunately for customers who migrated from earlier version of the iOS operating system, there is no way to downgrade. As such, if you are susceptible to motion sickness and have not upgraded to iOS 7, we would recommend that you wait until Apple offers an official response to this matter.
