The iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 may arrive with the same camera sensor and lens as the iPhone 5s, which could deliver vastly improved photo results and features like slow motion video the to the new iPads which could arrive within the next several weeks.
The iPad 4 and iPad mini currently use a 5MP rear facing camera which is capable of taking OK looking photos and decent videos, but the iPads currently lag behind the iPhones and most Android phones in performance. Combined with the larger size, owners using the iPad to take photos often annoy those around them and end up with mediocre photos for the effort.
Apple can’t change public opinion overnight, but if the new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 come with an improved 8MP camera like the one found in the new iPhone we could soon see more users taking photos with the iPad.
Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst with KGI Securities, accurately predicted many of the iPhone 5s features thanks to supply chain contacts and he is know back at it with iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 predictions. 9to5Mac shares Kuo’s latest report indicating an improved camera is on the way to the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2.
We expect the upgrade will include 8MP rear camera, up from 5MP, and larger aperture. Lens module ASP will rise 10-20% on this optics spec upgrade
Kuo believes a better camera will help increase the competitiveness of the iPad 5 as products like the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition) add an upgraded camera that is on par with what Samsung shipped in the Galaxy S3.
It’s not clear if this is the same camera as the iPhone 5s, but it would make sense for Apple to standardize this part. The iPhone 5c uses a 8MP sensor, but the aperture is the same as the iPad mini.
A larger aperture allows more light to the sensor, resulting in better photos in low light. Combined with an Apple A7X or A7 processor inside the iPad 5 and iPad mini this new camera could bring some of the camera features that arrived on the iPhone 5s last month, including
- faster focusing
- burst mode
- faster shutter
- auto image stabilization
- Slow motion video
- live video zoom
The video below highlights the new camera sensor and lens as well as the role a new Apple A7 processor plays in making these features possible.
Reports indicate Apple will announce the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 an an event on October 15th, though there is no official event confirmation yet.
