A new iPad 5 video claiming to show off the new smart covers for the new iPad backs up evidence of an iPad redesign as these new leaked smart covers fit perfectly onto the leaked iPad 5 chassis that has been swirling around for weeks and which takes on an iPad mini design.
For weeks, we’ve seen purported iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 leaks that claim to show off the back shells of these two rumored devices. The part leaks have arrived similar to the way we saw the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c leaks emerge, that is, we’ve seen a whole bunch of them and they all suggest the same thing.
iPad mini 2 part leaks point to an iPad mini 2 that looks exactly the same as the current iPad mini. However, it’s the iPad 5 that is rumored to be getting a makeover with leaks pointing to a design that uses an iPad mini-like design complete with anodized aluminum and thin bezels that will offer up more screen on the front.
The device is also thought to possibly be thinner, lighter and smaller than the iPad 4, Apple’s current 9.7-inch iPad that was introduced alongside the original iPad mini last year.
Just in case buyers needed more evidence, a new purported iPad 5 video from UnboxTherapy, a place that has leaked iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 parts in the past, appears to depict iPad 5 smart covers that, lo and behold, fit perfectly on the rumored iPad 5 chassis.
The video shows a number of different iPad 5 smart cover colors but the interesting piece is the fact that the covers fit perfectly on the iPad 5 back shell, something that backs up the previous leaks and points to an iPad 5 redesign. It doesn’t confirm it, Apple will be the one to do that, but it’s becoming clear that this is what the iPad 5 is likely going to look like.
Fortunately, those in the market for a new full-sized iPad should know soon as the company is heavily rumored to be announcing the iPad 5, alongside the iPad mini 2, sometime in October.
Rumors suggest that the company could be announcing both products at an event in mid-October, possibly October 15th. The company is also expected to detail the Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks release dates and could also introduce new MacBook Pro models with improved battery life.
Last year’s iPad 4 and iPad mini were announced in October and release in November, ahead of the holiday shopping season and Black Friday.
Update: 9to5Mac believes that the smart covers shown here are not for the iPad 5 but are instead, fakes from China. That doesn’t change the fact that they fit the new design but it looks like they aren’t official accessories from Apple. We should know for sure in just a couple of weeks.
