It’s that time of the year again where Apple is close to announcing new iPads, but it appears that the iPad Air 3 won’t make an appearance until next year, according to newer rumors.
We’ve been hearing a handful of rumors about the iPad Air 3 over the last couple of months, but a solid release date hasn’t been one of them. However, that’s probably because Apple may not even introduce the new tablet this year.
Rumors suggest that the iPad Air 3 will receive a decent performance boost over the iPad Air 2, possibly rocking an A9 processor instead of the A8X that’s in the iPad Air 2. The new tablet will also most likely stick with 2GB of memory. The Apple tablet received a huge boost in that department with the iPad Air 2, where it was stuffed with 2GB of memory instead of 1GB that was in the iPad Air.
It’s also expected that the iPad Air 3 will gain better cameras on the front and back, and that’s to be expected, as Apple always puts a bit of focus on that area when releasing a new version of a hardware product. For instance, the iPhone always gets a decent camera upgrade with each refresh, and the iPad Air 3 should be the same.
However, with all these rumors flying around, we might have to wait until next year before the iPad Air 3 even comes out, as a report from DigiTimes suggests that Apple is waiting until 2016 to release the new tablet. 9to5Mac‘s Mark Gurman also chimed in and said that it’s certainly possible that this could happen, and didn’t have a retort for the often-flaky DigiTimes rumor.
This would mean that Apple is taking a step back from its yearly refresh cycle for the full-sized iPad and could be re-evaluating some things. Plus, with the iPad Pro rumored to be released soon, it’s possible that Apple is putting a lot of focus on that product, as well as the iPad mini 4, which is also rumored to be released this year.
The iPad mini hasn’t received a lot of attention, especially from Apple. The iPad mini 3 was barely an upgrade, only coming with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a new gold color option. Other than that, it has the same processor, RAM, etc, as the iPad mini 2.
This year, though, the iPad mini 4 could be a big upgrade for the smaller tablet, although it’s said to still have some last-generation components.
The iPad mini 4 is rumored to be thinner than the iPad mini 3 and will most likely sport Apple’s A8 processor instead of the newer A9 chip that is rumored to go in the iPhone 6s. We’re not sure why this will be the case, but the iPad mini has always been an inferior iPad option behind the iPad Air lineup.
As for a Force Touch display on the iPad Pro or the iPad mini 4, or even the iPad Air 3, that’s still up in the air, but rumors are hot and heavy about the Force Touch display coming to the iPhone 6s, so it’s a good call if that display technology comes to the iPads, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple waited another year before implementing it into larger screens.
The iPad Pro will be Apple’s largest tablet ever, with rumors pointing to a 12.9-inch screen. The slate will most likely be targeted toward professionals out in the field who need a portable and capable machine to do some work on, like photographers and graphic designers.
It’ll also be a new category for Apple, so it’ll be interesting to see how the company announces the new tablet and when it will officially release.
