While Apple didn’t upgrade its new iPad with a quad-core processor in 2012, it appears that it might be outfitting the upcoming iPhone 5 with a quad-core processor for its fall arrival.
According to a report from the hit-or-miss publication Digitimes, the new iPhone, presumably called the iPhone 5, will be outfitted with a quad-core processor that will replace the current A5 chip found in the iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 5 will reportedly be arriving with Samsung’s Exynos 4 quad-core processor on board.
Prior to today, this would be far-fetched as Samsung’s quad-core Exynos 4 processor wasn’t thought to be able to handle 4G LTE, something that is expected to be on board the iPhone 5 when it arrives this fall. However, Samsung has announced that a 4G LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S III complete with 4G LTE and a Exynos 4 chip will be arriving on July 9th.
While this doesn’t confirm a 4G LTE iPhone 5 with a quad-core processor, it seems to leave open the possibility.
It’s also possible that Apple might opt for the A5X processor that is found in the new iPad and offers improved performance and quad-core graphics.
The iPad 2 was the first device to get the original A5 processor and Apple used the same processor for the iPhone 4S. So, it’s possible that we might see the company decide to go that route instead.
Apple’s iPhone 5 is rumored to be coming out this fall with August, September and October all rumored to be launch months for the new smartphone.
The device is supposedly going to feature a thinner design and 4G LTE speeds. In addition, the device is also rumored a number of things including a 4-inch display, a metal back, an upgraded front-facing camera, and iOS 6.
