A new video shows what a thinner, lighter iPhone 6 could look like with a larger display, stereo speakers and multiple color options.
The iPhone 6 is likely one generation out, after an iPhone 5S release later this year, but that hasn’t stopped the flow of beautiful looking iPhone 6 concepts.
Unlike many concepts that claim outlandish features and use technology which may not be available for years, the iPhone 6 concept video below looks technically possible and doesn’t stray too far from Apple’s design DNA.
The video highlights the iPhone 6 with a 4.2-inch display that is now wider than the iPhone 5. Thanks to thinner bezels, the iPhone 6 concept is narrower than the iPhone 5. For the iPhone 6, thinner bezels and a thinner phone could allow for a larger screen that still allows one-handed operation. We’ve seen many larger screen Android phones that work well with one-hand operation, with screens all the way up to 4.8-inches, so we don’t see a hard limit on the screen size for a future iPhone.
The iPhone 6 concept dimensions are 108.5mm x 55.7mm x 7.1mm and the phone weighs 104 grams.
Apple could use the screen technology from the iPad mini to prevent errant page turns and screen touches an iPhone 6 with such thin bezels.
In this iPhone 6 concept, we also see the removal of the home button, which helps keep the iPhone 6 concept smaller than the iPhone 5 in height. There is no relocating it to the side of the iPhone, so Apple would need to incorporate gesture or motion controls. Perhaps the company could deliver a feature like the Galaxy Note 2, which can turn the screen on by waving a hand over it while on a flat surface.
In this concept we see an iPhone 6 with a 4.2-inch display but the same 1136 x 640 resolution as the iPhone 5. While this would deliver the benefit of not forcing developers to update apps, at some point Apple will need to jump to a higher resolution and drag developers along for the ride.
Other features include rear-facing stereo speakers and the color options similar to the iPod Touch, rather than just black and white.
It would surprise us if Apple stuck with a similar iPhone 5 design through a third generation of iPhone models. The company patterns indicate that we typically see a new model and then an ‘S’ model, before the cycle repeats.
While we expect the iPhone 5S release this summer or fall, it is not surprising that we are already hearing rumors of an iPhone 6. In 2012, we began hearing iPhone 5S rumors before the iPhone 5 launched, though not quite this far in advance. This may be due to consumers who are looking for a brand new iPhone experience, rather than an iPhone 5S this summer.
While it is more likely that we will see the iPhone 5S before the iPhone 6, Apple is likely testing the iPhone 6 as a prototype. We heard that one iPhone 6 prototype features a massive 4.8-inch display.
